Approach to Analysis

In the previous chapter we mentioned that the analyst in organic chemistry does not have a systematic procedure at his disposal for the solution of his problems. There are cases, of course, when he is able to elaborate a basic systematic procedure for a series of analyses, but in the case of one anomalous sample such a procedure might already become useless. [Pg.20]

In spite of this, it is necessary to outline certain directives for the solution of problems of qualitative organic analysis and to show the way these problems should be approached. [Pg.20]

Generally, for all cases of organic analysis the following five principles apply ,  [Pg.20]

The analyst must be told exactly the aim and extent of the task presented to him. This is very important, because the analyst has to choose the method according to the requirements of the analytical result. We have often been witnesses to misunderstandings in this respect and we consider it necessary to elucidate this question. The analyst may be asked to do a complicated job, but after discussion between the analyst and the customer it might turn out that the problem could have been solved in a much simpler way. In other cases just the opposite may occur. It makes a great difference whether a mixture is to be analyzed for the main component or for a minor component or even trace amounts the kind of substances in whose presence it is to be determined also matters. [Pg.20]

The analyst must always be maximally informed on the problem to be solved and on the sample to be analyzed. This facilitates his work and ensures a speedier solution of the problem. In practice, the approach to this problem is different than in a teaching situation, where for educational reasons the student has to reach his results by a strictly experimental method. To the analyst, the mere knowledge of the origin of the sample may be of great value, as may a knowledge of its use, the conditions under which it was obtained, etc., although these details may seem unimportant to the customer. [Pg.20]


Ion-selective electrodes are a relatively cheap approach to analysis of many ions in solution. The emf of the selective electrode is measured relative to a reference electrode. The electrode potential varies with the logarithm of the activity of the ion. The electrodes are calibrated using standards of the ion under investigation. Application is limited to those ions not subject to the same interference as ion chromatography (the preferred technique), e.g. fluoride, hydrogen chloride (see Table 10.3). [Pg.310]
