In this chapter we will provide a brief introduction to the PAES technique including a discusion of the PAES mechanism, the advantages and applications of PAES in surface analysis, and an outline of the theory underlying calculation of PAES intensities. In addition, this chapter will include the first atlas of PAES spectra of the elements in which the intensities have been plotted using a comon normalization method (based on a new analysis of original data) so as to permit direct comparison of relative PAES intensities. The reader is refered to previous PAES reviews for additional PAES examples, applications, and references [4-7]. [Pg.310]

Bunz et al. pointed out that it would be of interest to develop materials that combine the stability, electron affinity, and high emissive quantum yield of PPEs with the excellent hole injection capabilities of poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs) [48]. In line with this notion,recent synthetic activities have focused on the engineering of the band gap, conduction band, and valence band of PAEs with the objective to render these materials more useful for practical applications that exploit their electrically (semi)conducting nature. Examples of materials that emerged from these efforts are discussed in detail in other portions of this volume (in particular the chapters by Bunz, Klemm, and Yamamoto). The toxicological data for the sulfosuccinate esters are summarized in Table XX. Products of this type in general show low toxicity and low irritation. Eye irritation decreases with increasing EO mole number, approaching the non-irritating level. Further, both skin and eye irritation of AES (Sulfate of PAE) can be significantly weakened when mixed with the sulfosuccinate (Table XX). Early on, an attractive feature of PAEs was a marked fluorescence in dilute solution. Emission x and the fluorescence quantum yield depend upon the substituent and the arylene moiety of PAEs. Later, the fluorescence quantum yield of PAEs in solution can reach unity. The rigid character of PAEs seems to make intramolecular dissipation difficult, and insofar fluorescence is efficient. Products containing less than 10 ppm of DCP are now referred to as Generation 3 PAE wet strength resins. This class of resins meets the strict requirements of residual DCP and CPD levels permitted in some final paper products, such as liquid packaging board (LPB) and tea bag paper. Development of this class of resins was started in the 1990s, and usually involves the application of a post-manufacturing cleaning technique that removes residual DCP and CPD from the product. [Pg.151]

PAE resins require the application of heat for the chemical reactions to occur. Usually, the maximum level of wet-strength is not achieved on the paper machine. The paper requires ageing (resin curing) to fully impart the wet-strength to the fiber network. The heterocyclic PAEs are useful for low-bandgap applications, as n-type semiconductors, and in sensory applications. Again, as long as the alkynylated or iodinated monomers are available, the synthesis of the corresponding PAE is not a problem, and either the Pd-catalyzed couplings or alkyne metathesis can be utilized toward that end. [Pg.31]

In order to quantify the transition metal ion concentration, Jones et al. [107] developed a highly sensitive fluorescent chemosensor in the form of dialkoxy-phenyleneethynylene-thiophene copolymers 68/69. The PAEs were functionalized on the thiophene unit with terpyridine (68), and included 2,2 -bipyridine (69) as a Lewis acid receptor. The terpyridine polymers [108] were found to respond quantitatively to transition metal ions at concentrations as low as 4x10 M (NP, Hg, Cr ", and Co " ). The additionally used bpy-PAE demonstrates that variation in the chelation at the receptor site is an important variable in tuning selectivity. The observed dynamic quenching mechanism, combined with the solubility of this material, provides the opportunity to extend these initial investigations to thin solid films for use in real-time monitoring applications. [Pg.84]
