Applications in new construction

In both these NDT application fields, new construction and maintenance, these tendencies can lead to rationalisation, with cost reduction as a result, maintaining existing safety levels. 

In recent years, epoxy resin systems have been utilized for special applications on the exteriors of buildings. One of these systems involves the use of an epoxy plaster, which is troweled onto the surface of an exposed wall, into which are set stone aggregates. This surfacing resembles a pre-cast concrete panel with an exposed aggregate facing. This method is utilized, not only in new construction, but in re-surfacing deteriorated areas. 

Keeping environmental and economic factors in mind, it was envisaged in a review [18] that the disposal problem could be solved by incorporating ground waste rubber into virgin polymer matrices. At the end of 2001, the Asphalt Rubber Technology service has reported to be planning to use crumb rubber in several applications in the construction of its new research facility [19].

The second part of this book is devoted to current and potential applications of adhesive materials in construction. Chapter 6 deals with both the repair and the strengthening of concrete structures, covering applications ranging from non-structural patch repairs and resin overlays to externally bonded steel plate reinforcement. The theme of repair and strengthening is extended to applications involving steel, timber and masonry structures. A number of case histories are reviewed and discussed with reference to the successes and failures, and the results of allied research work are presented. In Chapter 7 a number of applications of adhesives in new construction are described, and specific examples are given. The final chapter. Chapter 8, examines the potential for future developments in adhesive usage. 

For applications in new bridge construction a design life of 120 years is required(25). Although it may be possible to design out fatigue and creep by keeping working stresses low(26) the influence of the environment on adhesives over such a time span is very much... 

Epoxy resin, as an adhesive, is nsed for many applications in building/construction, (i.e., it is possible to bond a new rebar to existing steel in concrete instead of welding it, by use of special epoxy adhesives). Epoxy can bond to almost any material (for strnctural or non-structural bonding) with high adhesive strength in various environments and temperatures. In civil engineering applications, epoxy adhesives are used to bond concrete in a number of different ways. Epoxy can be used to bond plastic concrete (or wet concrete) to cured concrete, it can be used to bond cured concrete to cured concrete, or cured concrete to cracked concrete, as well as to bond cured concrete to other materials with similar or dissimilar thermal expansion coefficients and elastic moduli. 

Plastics materials will not reduce the demand for bricks, mortar and concrete but it is clear that as the construction industry gains confidence in using new materials, their influence is likely to spread. The main uses of plastics materials and their applications in building construction can be summarised as in Table 6.6.

Pillararenes (PA), a new kind of paracyclophane, were first synthesized in 2008 as pillar[5]arene (PA[5]) and were recognized as a new generation of supramolecular host because of their unique pillar structural feature, nanometer-sized (<1.0nm) cavity, and multiple fiinctionalizable sites. In the last few years, these new types of compound have shown biomedical applications in the construction of artificial channels for transmembrane transport of physiologically active solutes and vesicles for drug delivery, which will be reviewed in this chapter. 

Further improvements and research that will entail the method s performance in real cases and the algorithmic approach for the solving of the network are planned in this ongoing research, which intends to provide a new human reliability assessment method for application in the construction industry. 

Other Design Criteria. The Department s Design Manual contains many other details on proper geometric design techniques. These criteria are obviously applicable to new construction and reconstruction. For 3R projects, these criteria have heen evaluated and a judgment has heen made on their proper application to 3R projects. Unless, stated otherwise in this Chapter, the criteria in other chapters apply to 3R projects and should be incorporated if practical. 

For NDT of new construction this implies that, the more one knows about the material properties and operational conditions, the better the acceptance criteria for weld defects can be based on the required weld integrity and fine-tuned to a specific application. In pipeline industry, this is already going to happen. 

In the construction of new plants and equipment, the employer is responsible that the equipment is suitable for the process application. Checks and inspections are performed to assure that equipment is installed properly, and consistent with design specifications and the manufacturer s instructions.
