Applications electrics

Probing electric and magnetic fields, and the effects induced by them, is of obvious mterest in many areas of science and technology. We considered earlier the influence of such perturbations in a general fashion in section Bl.5.2.2. Here we describe some related experimental measurements and applications. Electric fields act to break hrversion and thus... [Pg.1298]

The COP s of specific air conditioners will vary widely with both manufacturer and application. Electricity utility efficiencies will also differ between countries. However, the reason for the economic interest in heat-driven cycles remains clear. Given that primary fuels can cost the consumer approximately 25% of the cost of electricity and that electricity frequently costs more at times of peak demand, there is justification for considering alternative systems. The use of a primary fuel at the point of use can also reduce COj and other emissions. [Pg.303]

Silver Highly conductive (0.1 ohm per square foot or less) applied by conventional spray equipment easy application electrically stable (minimal change in resistance with environmental cycling) easily applied to selected area field repairable. High cost... [Pg.393]

Safety device All machines are equipped (or should be equipped) with applicable electrical, hydraulic, and/or mechanical safety devices. Some of them, such as injection molding machines, have all three modes for safety operations. [Pg.642]

The proportionality coefficient L, termed the intercept ratio, depends on a number of factors such as the turbine size, the turbine design, the application (electrical or direct drive), and so on. It must be determined from performance data and usually lies in the range of 0.05 and 29. [Pg.474]

Complete PV systems consist of modules (also referred to as panels), which contain solar cells and the so-called balance of system (BoS). The BoS mainly comprises electronic components, cabling, support structures and, if applicable, electricity storage or optics and Sun trackers (the latter for concentrator systems). The BoS costs also include labor costs for turn-key installation. [Pg.345]

Solid State Reaction - Hexaaluminates have been long known as interesting materials for many applications (electrical ceramics, matrices for permanent immobilization of radioactive elements from nuclear wastes and refractory cement and concrete). For many years ceramists prepared hexaaluminates via solid state reaction for both crystallographic and application purposes.6... [Pg.86]

The ELECTRE family has been extended frequently to improve the original method and develop methods for different applications. ELECTRE II aims at ranking alternatives. It constructs a downward and an upward ranking in a multi-step procedure based on a strong and a weak outranking relationship and consequently requires two pairs of concordance and discor-... [Pg.142]

NSOM methods can provide extremely valuable information about the functional properties of optical and optoelectronic materials.243 In many such applications, electrical potentials and/or electric fields are applied to samples as a means to induce changes in the local optical properties of the sample. Frequently, an electrified NSOM probe is employed in these studies.244 The resulting changes in... [Pg.141]

The other concepts associated with nanotechnology are those described above, positional assembly and self-replication. Nanotechnology is currently being used for light-emitting polymer films, in computer applications, electrically conductive adhesives, and other areas. [Pg.81]

Applications of Ni/MH batteries include computers, camcorders, cellular phones, communication equipment, variety of cordless consumer products, high rate long cycle life applications, electric vehicles (under development), and so on. Ni/MH batteries are more environmental friendly than Ni/Cd batteries, and they are easy to dispose. Disadvantages of Ni/MH batteries include lower rate capability, poorer charge retention, and less tolerance for overcharge than Ni-Cd batteries. Like Ni/Cd batteries, Ni/MH batteries are also subject to the memory effect a description of this phenomenon can be found in Sect. 7.9.2.2. [Pg.414]

Good precision and simple operation are provided by commercial Bourdon gauges which mechanically amplify the deformation of a spiral tubing into the deflection of a large pointer, so giving, at their best, a resolution of 1/1000 of the maximum deflection. For modern applications, electrical signals can be provided by potentiometers which are coupled to the axis of the pointer. [Pg.49]

Metals are very important for structural applications, electrical wires, cooking utensils, tools, decorative items, and many other purposes. However, because the main chemical characteristic of a metal is its ability to give up electrons, almost all metals in nature are found in ores, combined with nonmetals such as oxygen, sulfur, and the halogens. To recover and use these metals, we must separate them from their ores and reduce the metal ions. Then, because most metals are unsuitable for use in the pure state, we must form alloys that have the desired properties. The process of separating a metal from its ore and preparing it for use is known as metallurgy. The steps in this process are typically... [Pg.987]

Consider the indnctive RF discharge in a long cylindrical tnbe placed inside of the cylindrical coil. The physical properties of snch a discharge are similar to those of the planar one which is more convenient for applications. Electric field E r) induced inthe discharge tnbe located inside of the long coil is... [Pg.224]

There are two types of conductive adhesives conventional materials that conduct electricity equally in all directions (isotropic conductors) and those materials that conduct in only one direction (anisotropic conductors). Isotropically conductive materials are typically formulated by adding silver particles to an adhesive matrix such that the percolation threshold is exceeded. Electrical currents are conducted throughout the composite via an extensive network of particle-particle contacts. Anisotropically conductive adhesives are prepared by randomly dispersing electrically conductive particles in an adhesive matrix at a concentration far below the percolation threshold. A schematic illustration of an anisotropically conductive adhesive interconnection is shown in Fig. 1. The concentration of particles is controlled such that enough particles are present to assure reliable electrical contacts between the substrate and the device (Z direction), while too few particles are present to achieve conduction in the X-Y plane. The materials become conductive in one direction only after they have been processed under pressure they do not inherently conduct in a preferred direction. Applications, electrical conduction mechanisms, and formulation of both isotropic and anisotropic conductive adhesives are discussed in detail in this chapter. [Pg.841]
