Application knowledge

Although less known than diatomite, these products have been in wide use for many years so that there exists a sound body of applications knowledge upon which to base grade selection, dosage, and procedures. Perlite and Solka-floc have the same availability in bagged, semi-bulk, or bulk formats as diatomite. 

Critically evaluated experimental data covering the densities of organic compounds is essential for both scientific and industrial applications. Knowledge of densities is important in many areas, including custody transfer of materials, product specification, development of various predictive methods, and for characterizing compounds and estimating their purity. 

Understanding the adsorption, diffusivities and transport limitations of hydrocarbons inside zeolites is important for tailoring zeolites for desired applications. Knowledge about diffusion coefficients of hydrocarbons inside the micropores of zeolites is important in discriminating whether the transport process is micropore or macropore controlled. For example, if the diffusion rate is slow inside zeolite micropores, one can modify the post-synthesis treatment of zeolites such as calcination, steaming or acid leaching to create mesopores to enhance intracrystalline diffusion rates [223]. The state provides to industry a harmonised framework for determining, evaluating and communicating risks in the European market (REACH). This also includes a form of standardisation for procedures, responsibilities and time frames in the chain, and options for state sanctions. This increases the market potential and innovation incentives for demonstrably application-safe chemical products. At the same time the basis is created for efficiency gains by employing universal IT solutions in the European market. However, the required framework also means that implementation is left to the industry and the market in many areas in order to leave enough scope for diversified solutions that are specific to the different supply chains. Simply the announcement of the REACH system has improved vertical communication in the supply chains and supported the consolidation of substance and application knowledge.

For technical applications, knowledge of the irradiation behaviour of the Levextrel-TBP resin is important. A detailed study carried out at the Radiochemistry Institute of the Technical University, Munich(21,22), showed that with gamma irradiation the formation rate of dibutyl phosphoric acid (HDBP) and of "non-removable" acidic radiolysis products ("do-bads") is 2 to 5 times lower with Levextrel-TBP resin than with pure TBP the effect is attributed to the "scavanger" action of the aromatic groups in the matrix material. In summary, a high radiation resistance of the resin has become evident.

In order to optimise pesticide application, knowledge of its performance is required.
