Knowledge-based system applications

Many applications of knowledge based systems have been described... [Pg.66]

Rules. Rules, first pioneered by early applications such as Mycin and Rl, are probably the most common form of representation used in knowledge-based systems. The basic idea of rule-based representation is simple. Pieces of knowledge are represented as IF—THEN rules. IF—THEN rules are essentially association pairs, specifying that IF certain preconditions are met, THEN certain fact(s) can be concluded. The preconditions are referred to as the left-hand side (LHS) of the rule, while the conclusions are referred to as the right-hand side (RHS). In simple rule-based systems, both the... [Pg.532]

Technical and Business Issues. In general, the successful application of any technology is dependent on both technical and business issues. For knowledge-based systems, six critical issues are problem identification, user acceptance, measurement of impact, appropriateness, feasibility, and cost. [Pg.536]

Most electrochemical studies carried out today make use of online computers for control of experiments and for data acquisition and analysis, including the techniques described earlier. Examples of the application of computer evaluation of experimental results include, for instance, pattern recognition [151] and the recording of current-time profiles of the form A(lni)/A(lnt) versus t for mechanistic classification [152] as well as nonlinear regression techniques [153-155]. Efforts have also been made to use knowledge-based systems for the elucidation of reaction mechanisms [156]. [Pg.132]
