Ulcer aphthous

In contrast to UC, the pattern of inflammation in CD is described as discontinuous. Areas of inflammation are intermixed with areas of normal GI mucosa, resulting in characteristic skip lesions. Superficial aphthous ulcers may also develop in the GI mucosa. These ulcers may coalesce into larger linear ulcers, resulting in fissure formation as they increase in depth, giving rise to the characteristic cobblestone pattern observed upon examination of the mucosa. [Pg.284]

In nicotine replacement therapy, the chewing gum releases nicotine, which is absorbed through the buccal mucosa every time a piece of chewing gum is chewed. The chewing gum is chewed for 30 minutes, only when one feels the urge to smoke. The transdermal patch provides a residual nicotine level throughout the application. A side-effect of nicotine chewing gum may be aphthous ulcers. [Pg.81]

Stomatitis is a troublesome adverse effect of DMARDs. Ulcers of the oral mucosa are not uncommon in patients taking penicillamine (188,173) and lead to withdrawal in 3.1% of patients (174). However, stomatitis may be a consequence of multiple factors, including hematinic deficiency, virus or Candida infection, recurrent aphthous ulceration, or Sjogren s syndrome. Moreover, aphthous stomatitis often occurs in users of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (175). [Pg.2735]
