A crude extract of Linderae umbellatae exhibited antipeptic and antiulcerogenic activity, and these effects were considered ascribable to the presence of tannins or related compounds. Nine condensed tannins (monomers, dimers, trimers, and tetramers) have been isolated and their antipeptic and antiulcer activity confirmed experimentally (pylorus ligated in rats and stress-induced gastric lesions in mice).

Other secondary metabolites from the genus have been reported to possess various biological properties. For example, the components responsible for the antifungic activity of some species from the genus was proven to be polyacetylenes and the antiulcerogenic activity of this genus is associated with polysaccharides. 

As mentioned previously, acyliminium ions are electrophilic enough to react intramolecularly even with nonactivated alkenic ir-systems. These cyclization reactions have been recognized and elaborated as valuable tools in the stereoselective total synthesis of quinolizidine, indolizidine and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. A typical example from Speckamp s laboratory is the highly stereospecific acid-catalyzed cyclization of (81) to (83 Scheme 40), presumably via the corresponding acyliminium ion (82). Analogously, other more complex natural products, such as the antiulcerogenically active alkaloid ma-trine (85), can be built up with high stereocontrol (Scheme 41), with an enol ether function as a more electron-rich nucleophile for the intermediate iminium ion (84). ...

Administration of the compound curcumin to rats at doses of 100 mg/kg daily for 6 days increased the formation of stomach ulcers, whereas doses of 50 mg/kg had no effect (Gupta et al. 1980). Conversely, an ethanolic extract of turmeric at a dose of 500 mg/kg was shown to have significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats subjected to stress or administered ulcer-causing compounds (Rafatullah et al. 1990). 

Documented effects A dry extract from the aboveground parts, as well as the total proanthocyanidins have antihypoxic, antioxidant, angioprotective, and hypocholesterimic abilities (Aizikov et al. 1986). An ethanolic extract of the aboveground plant parts had antiulcerogenic activity in rats (Amani et al. 2006), and a methanolic extract exhibited an antidiarrheal effect (Atta and Mouneir 2004).
