The objective of this paper was to investigate the anticlastogenic and antitoxic effects exerted by HS of various origin and nature on several monocotyledon and dicotyledon herbaceous plant species treated with different mutagenic and phytotoxic compounds. 

Some HS samples were also tested, either alone or in combination with some mutagenic compounds, for their possible antitoxic effect on the seedlings of some plant species. In particular (a) the sample ASHA at a concentration of 10 or 100 mg L-1, alone or in combination with 1 or 10 mg L 1 of ALA, was tested on T. turgidum and (b) samples SHHA, PHA, PFA, LHA, SHA and SFA at concentrations of 20 or 200 mg L-1, alone or in combination with 10 mg L 1 MH, were tested on V. faba. Besides an anticlastogenic activity, some HS appear to possess also an antitoxic activity, i.e., they were able not only to suppress plant growth depression caused by MH and ALA, but also stimulate growth. Peat, leonardite and alluvial soil HS yielded the best results also for the antitoxic activity. 

Antitoxic effect. Sesame oil, adiministered to male Wistar rats, ameliorated hepatic and renal damage in a dose-dependent manner and increased survival in lipopolysaccha-ride-treated rats. It decreased lipid peroxide concentration in serum but not in liver and kidney. Serum nitrite production was unaffected by sesame oil ingestion, and the activity of xanthine oxidase was reduced in the lipopolysaccharide-challenged rats k Anti-tumor activity. Water extract of the dried seed, administered intragastrically to mice at a dose of 50 mg/animal daily for 5 days, was active on CA-Ehrlich-ascites, 18% increase in life-span. Intraperitoneal administration was active on Dalton s lyphoma and CA-Ehrlich-ascites, 19 and 39% increase in life-span, respectively ". Seed oil, administered to rats intraperito-neally with 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene or re-tene, was active on sarcoma ".

By using the S0D/H202 biosensor set up in our laboratory, we recently evaluated the scavenging properties in vitro of important molecules such as cysteine, melatonin, /(-carotene and acetyl salicylic acid to be considered as antitoxic agents against radicals as well as of fresh vegetal and fruit tissues, or else of extracts of the same fruits and vegetals present on the market and available in the chemists or herbalists shops. 

Chronic exposure to CS2 leads to hepatic enlargement and disturbance of liver antitoxic function, with possible synergistic interactions with diet or drugs also to increased retinal arterial pressure and retinal microaneurysms. There is some evidence of hearing impairment over time.
