Amomum subulatum is one kind of cardamoms belonging to Zingiberaceae. It is a native of the eastern Himalayas and now cultivated in Nepal and India. Because the fruits of A. subulatum are straw-colored and at least six times the size of the common greenish cardamoms Elettaria cardamomum), they are commonly called either greater cardamom or black cardamom. They give a characteristic intense flavor to food and are also used as a traditional medicine. [Pg.181]
