Antidandruff agents shampoos

The sulfosuccinate monoester based on undecylenic acid monoethanolamide and its antimicrobial properties was described shortly before [12]. In comparison of shampoos containing different antidandruff agents, this sulfosuccinate s performance was favorably evaluated [13]. It was neutral with respect to lipid replacement on scalp and forehead after application of the respective shampoo. This undecylenic acid-based sulfosuccinate was also found to reduce dandruff formation in another investigation [14]. 

Shampoos are commonly formulated in liquid, paste, and gel form and usually consist of high-sudsing anionic surfactant(s) (such as LAS and those previously listed for bars), along with specific ingredients for improved hair health or control (such as antidandruff agents and substantive collagen proicins). 

SAFETY PROFILE Poison by ingestion, skin contact, intraperitoneal, and intravenous routes. Moderately toxic by subcutaneous route. An experimental teratogen. Experimental reproductive effects. An eye irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits vety" toxic fumes of NOx, SOx, and ZnO. Used as an antidandruff agent in shampoos. See also ZINC COMPOUNDS and SULFIDES. 

Benzyl-p-chlorophenol is known to be a broad spectrum commercial bacteriacide j28 jjyt . g fungicidal properties have not been published. 2-(4 -thiazoyDbenzimldazole is a fungicide, produced by Merck Inc., which has been used in paints. Due to its nonvolitility and low solubility can be mixed with paints and remain in the film. 2-Mercaptopyridine-N-oxide is a fungicide produced by Olin Inc. and used widely in shampoos as an antidandruff agent. 

Shampoos are also formulated with antidandruff agents. Water-insoluble antidandruff agents, such as zinc pyrithione (ZPT), selenium sulfide, climbazole, coal tar derivatives, and sulfur, have been used in many products for treating dandruff. In the last decade there have been many new developments in this kind of product providing improved antidandruff efficacy. Three-in-one shampoos are also available, which provide cleaning, conditioning, and antidandruff benefits in one product.

This chapter mainly focuses on antimicrobial and antioxidant preservatives. Cosmetics containing UV filters were previously discussed in-depth in Section 3.1. On the other hand, cosmetics containing antimicrobial preservatives with other specific functions than protect the cosmetic product, like for example, as antidandruff agents in shampoos or as deodorants, are reviewed in Section 8.8.

Medicated Dandruff Shampoos. Dandruff is a scalp condition characterized by the production of excessive cellular material (18). A number of shampoos have been marketed which are designed to control and alleviate this condition, and many additives have been included in shampoo compositions to classify them as treatment products for dandruff. These additives include antimicrobial additives, eg, quaternary ammonium salts keratolytic agents, eg, salicyclic acid and sulfur heavy metals, eg, cadmium sulfide coal tar resorcinol and many others. More recent (ca 1993) systems use selenium sulfide [7488-56-4] or zinc pyrithione [13463-41 -7] as active antidandruff shampoo additives. Both of these additives are classified as drugs, but can be found in over-the-counter products. A stronger version, incorporating the use of higher levels of selenium sulfide in a shampoo, is available but requires a prescription for purchase.
