Antibodies glycoproteins

The variety of mechanisms mediating the therapeutic effect do not always require the complete antibody glycoprotein. For some applications the optimal structure is not necessarily the whole immunoglobulin, but is rather a distinctive fragment containing the specific antigen-binding domain. Recently, it has been shown for example that their small size permits them to penetrate tissues or solid tumors more rapidly than whole antibodies [4].

Standardization and Testing". The final vaccine is tested for safety, potency, and residual chemicals. Safety includes testing for endotoxin and stetihty. Potency is evaluated by quantitative determination of the amount of hemagglutinin in the vaccine. Antibody to this glycoprotein is associated with protection. The single radial immunodiffusion (SKID) technique is used to standardi2e the mass of this protein in comparison to a reference preparation.

The concentration of total protein in human plasma is approximately 7.0-7.5 g/dL and comprises the major part of the solids of the plasma. The proteins of the plasma are actually a complex mixture that includes not only simple proteins but also conjugated proteins such as glycoproteins and various types of lipoproteins. Thousands of antibodies are present in human plasma, though the amount of any one antibody is usually quite low under normal circumstances. The relative dimensions and molecular masses of some of the most important plasma proteins are shown in Figure 50-1.

Whereas (32 glycoprotein 1 ((J2-GPI) is the target of anticardiolipin antibodies, prothrombin is the antigen for most lupus anticoagulants.
