South Africa is by far the largest producer of primary (newly mined) PGMs. It suppHed 76% of the platinum used in the West in 1993, and over 50% of all PGMs. South African PGMs are mined as primary product. Other metals such as nickel, copper, and cobalt are by-products. The principal PGM mining houses in South Africa are Anglo American Platinum Corporation (Amplats), Impala Platinum, Lonrho South Africa, and Northam Platinum.

Third, the electron theory of valence, cultivated mainly by Anglo-American physicists and physical chemists in the first two decades of the twentieth century, offered mechanical models for chemical affinity on the molecular level. These models combined data from structural chemistry with insights about physical mechanisms involving ions and electrons from the rapidly developing work of radiation physicists and spectroscopists. The further application of this third approach is the subject of chapters 6, 7, and 8, as it was developed by specific research schools in different national traditions and became part of the fundamental framework of the new subdiscipline of physical organic chemistry. 

In the conclusion, the relationship of disciplines to schools and traditions is discussed, both in the particular instances of the Paris and London-Manchester schools and in the more general history of Continental and Anglo-American science, using elements of the disciplinary identity schema developed at the beginning of the book. I end with an inquiry into the views of mid-twentieth-century theoretical chemists and chemical physicists on the commensurability of their disciplines, the reducibility of chemical explanation to physical principles and laws, and the distinctiveness of chemistry from physics. 

Foucault, like his French predecessor and mentor, Gaston Bachelard, paid particular attention to the primacy in history of discursive breaks and ruptures in knowledge or belief systems.3 In this and in Foucault s emphasis on the relative coercion that disciplines exercised on their practitioners, he made arguments already familiar to Anglo-American scholars acquainted with Kuhn s characterizations of "normal science" and the reasons for a scientific community s coherent outlook. However, unlike Kuhn, Foucault declined to dissect the so-called hard sciences as objects of inquiry, restricting himself to discourses and power relationships in the medical, biological, and social sciences.4 However, Foucault did see the potential in the application of his method for the destruction of the demarcation between scientific and nonscientific spheres of action and belief. 

On the chemical side, there was an important linkage between the development of an American, indeed, a larger Anglo-American, scientific community in quantum chemistry and the slightly earlier development in Anglo-American science of the field of physical organic chemistry. The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo porphyry deposit contains one of the largest resources of Cu and Au in the world. The deposit consists of two zones Pebble West, discovered by Cominco America in 1989, and Pebble East, discovered in 2005 by Northern Dynasty Minerals Inc. (NDM), who began exploring the area in 2001. In 2007, NDM and Anglo American formed the Pebble Limited Partnership. The West and East zones contain a combined resource of 72 billion pounds of Cu, 94 million ounces of Au, and 4.8 billion pounds of Mo (NDM 2009).
