And sewage sludge

Accumulation of heavy metals (HM) in different compartments of the biosphere, and their possible mobilization under changing environmental conditions induce a perturbation of the ecosystem and adverse health effects. Fast and correct estimating the environmentally relevant fonus of HM in soils, sediments, and sewage sludge is an urgent need for environmental monitoring and assessment. [Pg.233]

Fluidized-bed process incinerators have been used mostly in the petroleum and paper industries, and for processing nuclear wastes, spent cook liquor, wood chips, and sewage sludge disposal. Wastes in any physical state can be applied to a fluidized-bed process incinerator. Au.xiliary equipment includes a fuel burner system, an air supply system, and feed systems for liquid and solid wastes. The two basic bed design modes, bubbling bed and circulating bed, are distinguished by the e.xtent to which solids are entrained from the bed into the gas stream. [Pg.155]

Coal gasification is fuel flexible so that the process can use the most available feedstock at the best price. Gasifiers have successfully gasified hcar y fuel oil and combinations of oil and waste gas. Other possible gasification feedstock includes petroleum coke, trash, used tires, and sewage sludge. Various combinations of feedstocks and coal have been successfully gasified. [Pg.1180]

Since ATP is present in ah organisms with a fairly constant intercellular concentration, the ATP concentration is a useful index of total biomass and has been applied as such to monitor bacteria in food, biomass in wastewater, and sewage sludge [160], The high sensitivity of this assay allows the use of the firefly assay as a tool for detection of life on other planets. Table 2 shows some applications of the analysis of ATP. [Pg.27]

Secondary sources of PCDD/PCDFs, their reservoirs, are those matrices where they are already present, either in the environment or as products. Product reservoirs include PCP-treated wood, PCB-containing transformers and sewage sludge, compost and liquid manure, which can be used as fertilizers in agriculture and gardens. Reservoirs in the environment are, for example, landfills and waste dumps, contaminated soils (mainly from former chemical production or handling sites), and contaminated sediments (especially in harbours and rivers with industries discharging directly to the waterways). [Pg.402]
