Sewage sludge disposal

Fluidized-bed process incinerators have been used mostly in the petroleum and paper industries, and for processing nuclear wastes, spent cook liquor, wood chips, and sewage sludge disposal. Wastes in any physical state can be applied to a fluidized-bed process incinerator. Au.xiliary equipment includes a fuel burner system, an air supply system, and feed systems for liquid and solid wastes. The two basic bed design modes, bubbling bed and circulating bed, are distinguished by the e.xtent to which solids are entrained from the bed into the gas stream.

At the more local scale, site characterization and site remediation technologies in soil were considered, as well as, sewage sludge disposal. Case histories of brownfield sites in Italy, UK, and USA were also presented.

Another material treated with microwave pyrolysis has been sewage sludge. Disposal of this material, which is a by-product in wastewater treatment processes, is a considerable problem and currently accounts for up to 60% of the operational cost of wastewater treatment plants. Microwave pyrolysis of sludge provides a rapid and efficient process with reduced process time and energy requirements compared with conventional pyrolysis [54]. 

The advantages of fluidized bed incinerators include simple compact design, low cost, high combustion efficiency, low gas temperatures, and large surface area for reaction. The disadvantages are the ash removal and carbon that build up in the bed. They are mainly used in petroleum and paper industries, wood chips, and sewage sludge disposal.

Much mercury used by humans is in consumer products (such as batteries) which are eventually disposed of with municipal waste. Also, sewage sludge contains mercury from both domestic and industrial sources (Department of the Environment 1977). As a result, both landfills and sewage sludge disposal sites are likely to be contaminated with mercury, although mercury may be precipitated as the sulphide in landfills. Data on the speciation of mercury contamination are given in Table 2.
