Ancillary circuits

The units and ancillary equipment must be protected from mechanical damage and the effects of weather to ensure the reliable operation of an impressed current station. This is achieved by installing it in a weatherproof plastic housing (see Fig. 8-2). Sufficient ventilation must be provided to disperse heat. The ventilation holes should be protected with brass gauze to keep out animals. Transformer-rectifier units must be connected to a circuit that is continuously energized, especially if they are in a building where the current is turned off at night, e.g., gas stations that are not open for 24 h.

The regions requiring inspection are the welds joining the above sections together plus the safe end transition welds to the primary circuit as shown in Figure 1. RPV inspections usually include ancillary items such as studs, nuts, washers etc. 

There are ancillary measures that can be taken to enhance the capability of a soldering process. For example, in the case of manually soldering components to a thick circuit board, the latter may be preheated to augment the heat input of the soldering iron. Similar approaches have been used for selective soldering, particularly when both the component and the circuit board are thermally massive. 

The steel reactor vessel consists of main cylindrical portion 11 ft 6 in. diameters, containing the core and reflector, with a neck 6 ft 3 in. diameter through which the fuel elements are inserted and removed. The whole reactor, with its shielding, primary coolant circuit and much of the ancillary plant, is enclosed in the containment vessel with an inner shell of steel 66 ft diameter, 81 ft high and an outer shell of concrete 110 ft diameter, 86 ft high with wall 2 ft thick. 

The occurrence which has generated more public concern than any other is the well-known Three Mile Island accident. The reactor involved was the second unit of two located on an island in the Susquehanna River, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The layout of the reactor circuit and ancillary systems is shown in Fig. 12.14. The sequence of events leading to the accident is given below. 

The AC impedance technique coupled to the complex plane method of analysis is a powerful tool to determine a variety of electrochemical parameters. To make the measurements, instrumentation is somewhat more complex than with other techniques. It requires a Wheatstone bridge arrangement with series capacitance and resistance in the comparison arm, a tuned amplifier/detector, and an oscillator with an isolation transformer. A Wagner ground is required to maintain bridge sensitivity, and a suitably large inductance should be incorporated in the electrode polarization circuit to prevent interference from the low impedance of this ancillary circuitry. Sophisticated measurement instruments or frequency response analyzers with frequency sweep and computer interface are currently available such as the Solartron frequency response analyzers. Data obtained can be analyzed or fitted into proper equivalent circuit using appropriate software. 

Steel is used extensively as a construction material in pressurized boilers and ancillary piping circuits. The boiler and the attached steam/water circuits are safety-critical items on a ship. The sudden explosive release of high-pressure steam/water can have disastrous consequences.
