Care should be taken to avoid short circuits for instance, an insulated specimen, being common with the ground point of some potentiostats, can become electrically reconnected to the autoclave if the latter is not separated from ground by using an isolation transformer. [Pg.1120]

Power proportioning controllers are generally more sophisticated forms of the constant voltage units, employing solid state circuitry and rapid time-constant sensing circuits. An isolation transformer isolates the controller from line voltage fluctuations. Common mode noise is converted to transverse mode noise in the impedance associated with the lines. Common mode noise when converted to transverse mode noise can be quite troublesome in sensitive, low-power devices. Filters or shielded isolation transformers reduce the amount by which common mode noise is converted to transverse mode noise. [Pg.160]

Contact detectors are somewhat easier to miniaturize. There are generally two subtypes those with twin axially mounted electrodes and those with twin or quadruple radially mounted electrodes. The former can be operated in DC mode or AC mode. In the DC mode, the detector signal directly originates from the field strength between the electrodes and, given the current, is inversely proportional to the detector cell resistance. In the AC mode, both axially and radially mounted electrodes form part of a closed primary circuit of an isolation transformer, the output of which is also inversely proportional to the cell conductivity. Alternatively, the output can be linearized with respect to the conductivity. [Pg.431]

Table 1 shows initial characterization of a small fraction of the isolated transformants. Strain 1 was the control , strains 2-6 were DNA insertional transformants that displayed relatively low Chi fluorescence, and strain 7 was a transformant with a relatively hi i Chi fluorescence. The Chi content of the cells and the Chi a/Chi b ratio were measured following strain cultivation in a small volume of liquid culture. A common feature of these transformants was the significantly lower than the control Chi content of the cells. Interestingly, this was the case for the five low-Chl fluorescence (strains 2-6) as well as the sole high Chi fluorescence strain ( 7). [Pg.116]

Measurements of the Chi a/Chl b ratio (Table 1) showed that strain 2 [Tanaka et al. 1998] was aberrant in Chi b biosynthesis (Chi Mess mutant). Strain 3 had a Chi a/Chi b ratio of 5.8/1 (Chl-deficient mutant), whereas strains 4-7 had either similar or lower than the control Chi [Pg.118]

Answer Usually, the control IC drives the switch directly. Therefore the IC must be located at the input side of the isolation transformer — that is called the primary side . The transformer windings that go to the output are therefore said to all lie on the secondary side. Between these primary and secondary sides lies no-man s land — the isolation boundary.
