Analysis and prospects

We have followed a simple approach that is easy and pragmatic . In the analysis, it will be shown how to introduce the evaluation at the right way in an organisation. In prospect, the strategy will be to reinforce this simplicity. 

In order to obtain a complete overview of this approach, it is important to look at two points  

1 How this method is perceived and used within the R D team 

This method has been used for several years within Danone. At first, we only used descriptive team tasting with scale and a consensual debrief. Given the importance of the evaluation, we have adapted the method to obtain better responses and so provide more relevant support. Recently, we have created a specific dafa process tool to facilitate and harmonize the test. This tool is now available to all the Danone R D teams and is combined with training. On the whole, feedback has been very positive, and the method is constantly in deployment amongst the international R D teams for the Danone dairy and water divisions. The expected impact has been achieved.

Several pooled analysis and meta-analysis studies for multiple cross-sectional (meta-analysis) and prospective (pooled analysis) cohort evaluations have been published. Lanphear et al. (2005) reported on a pooled analysis of seven of eight longitudinal studies in the hterature that followed children until at least 5 years of age. Various criteria were employed for inclusion, such as complete analyses for covariates. The final sample size was more than 1,300 children drawn from the following cohorts Boston, MA Cincinnati, OH Cleveland, OH Rochester, NY Mexico City, Mexico Port Pirie, Australia and Kosovo, former Yugoslavia. Various forms of the exposure measure were included concurrent, maximum, hfetime average, and early childhood PbB. The psychometric outcome was full scale IQ. Within the combined data points for exposures, a subset of 103 children had maximum PbB < 7.5 jig/dl.

Study showed reduction in pain (Youle and Osio 2007). A prospective, 48-week, placebo-controlled study is now completed and is under analysis, and results will be published in due course (Youle and Osio 2007).

Validations fall into two types prospective and retrospective. In prospective validation (see flow chart in Figure 2) the validation is done in a sequential manner, involving installation qualification and operational qualification (IQ/OQ) of equipment (e.g., chromatography instrumentation or column hardware). Appropriate calibrations accompany the IQ/OQ. Process qualification, or PQ, involves formal review and approval of a PQ protocol, execution of this protocol, and issuance of a formal PQ report which includes data analysis and recommendations (i.e., approval/certification of the process). If the process is not approved, the report may recommend a redesign or redoing of the validation protocol and, in some cases, a return of the process to process development for further optimization.

The prospects of DSC, have been reviewed in a special issue of Thermochimica Acta, which includes a collection of articles on advances of thermal analysis in the twentieth century and expected future developments [232,235,236]. Recent developments and prospects of these methods have been discussed in a chapter by Schneider et al. (2001). It was underlined that these methods are widely applied for the characterization of crystalline materials (phase identification, quantitative analysis, determination of structure imperfections, crystal structure determination and analysis of 3D microstructural properties). Phase identification was traditionally based on a comparison of observed data with interplanar spacings and relative intensities (d and T) listed for crystalline materials. More recent search-match procedures, based on digitized patterns, and Powder Diffraction File (International Centre for Diffraction Data, USA.) containing powder data for hundreds of thousands substances may result in a fast efficient qualitative analysis. The determination of the amounts of different phases present in a multi-component sample (quantitative analysis) is based on the so-called Rietveld method. Procedures for pattern indexing, structure solution and refinement of structure model are based on the same method.
