Amphoteric softeners

Some amphoteric softeners such as amino acids (10.237) and sulphobetaines (10.238) are more effective and durable than the nonionic types but less durable than the cationics moreover, they tend to be expensive. Other amphoteric types include the zwitterionic forms of quaternised imidazolines (10.239) long-chain amine oxides (10.240) also exhibit softening properties.

Also being sold are the amphoteric softeners, the betaines (general structure (CH3)3N CHRi-COQ ). Amphoteric/betaine surfactants are generally mild with low eye and skin irritation. They produce a good handle and greatly... 

The oils and waxes described as lubricants in section 10.10.1, as well as talc, can be used as softeners but have now been superseded by more effective products. These may be non-reactive or reactive and may be cationic, anionic, nonionic or amphoteric. Although many compounds have been patented, by far the most important are cationic quaternary ammonium compounds and various silicones. Until quite recently the field was led by the cationic types but there is now evidence that aminofunctional polysiloxanes have become the most important product group [482]. 

Contrary to anionic and nonionic agents, they have poor detergency and are used more in the preparation of germicides, fabric softeners, and emulsifiers. Amphoteric surfactants are produced in much smaller amounts (5xl04 metric tons, near to 2% of the total production) [125] they are biodegradable and their ecotoxicological importance can be considered low. Their environmental occurrence up to know has been just occasional.

SYNTHASIL SE 100 is a nonionic, elastomeric silicone emulsion for treatment of a broad spectrum of natural, synthetic and blended woven or knit goods. The nonionic nature of the product allows for its use with a wide range of nonionic, cationic, anionic and amphoteric surfactants, softeners and lubricants. 

Amphoteric surfactants. These compounds have the characteristics of both anionic detergents and cationic fabric softeners. They tend to work best at neutral pH, and are found in shampoos, skin cleaners, and carpet shampoos. They are very stable in strong acidic conditions and are favorably used with hydrofluoric acid. For example, compounds of alkyl-betain or alkylsulfobetaine type possess both anionic and cationic groups in the same molecule even in aqueous solution. These surfactants are rarely employed in laundry detergents because of their high costs [3, 4]. 

The consumer need for a milder dishwashing liquid was met in the early 1990s with the successful introduction of Palmolive Sensitive Skin and the milder positioning of Ivory LDLD. The use of nonionic and amphoteric surfactants resulted in clinically milder and less irritating products. In the last decade, however, further improving mildness was a significant objective for the major players in the LDLD market. Dawn Hand Care was the first to introduce protease, an enzyme that is claimed to soften skin by exfoliation of the top layer. 

Another way to achieve wash cycle fabric softening is to replace cationic actives by amphoteric or zwitterionic actives.

Binding of oleic add anhydride to cellulose fibre by chemical grafting is a recently introduced sustainable process to protect construction timber for outdoor use, such as pinewood shutters, from moisture and outside attack.
