Diet pills amphetamines

A prescription was needed for amphetamines, but people who were dependent on these drugs found ways to get them legally. They went to doctors who would continue to write refill prescriptions for amphetamine diet pills. Another option was to go to more than one doctor. People also went to diet clinics or found pharmacists who did not ask for a prescription. 

Figure 4.1 The chemical structure of amphetamine and fenfluramine are illustrated here. Fenfluramine (bottom) is a diet pill that is very similar in structure to amphetamine (top). Fenfluramine is an appetite suppressant, like amphetamine, but it does not have stimulant effects. Fenfluramine was proposed as a safer alternative to amphetamine and was very effective in causing weight loss, especially when used in combination with phentermine. Unfortunately, fenfluramine eventually led to devastating side effects, which led to its being withdrawn from the U.S. market.

Decongestants and diet pills result in false positives for amphetamine use in one third of the test samples given to 40 of the countries leading laboratories. There are roughly 300 over-the-counter drugs that cause false positives on the EMIT. 

United States Congress passes Controlled Substance Act (CSA). CS A puts strict controls on the production, import, and prescription of amphetamines. Many amphetamine forms, particularly diet pills, are removed from the over-the-counter market.

ANORECTICS Diet pills developed to replace amphetamines. 

In 1937, the amphetamine dextroamphetamine was sold as a diet pill under the trade name Dexedrine. This medication was twice as potent as other amphetamines. It was also regarded as having the least amount of side effects. However, amphetamines were highly addictive. 

With the nation aware of the dangers of amphetamines, pharmaceutical companies worked to produce diet pills with less potential for misuse or abuse. 

Pharmaceutical companies developed diet pills with amphetamine congeners, chemicals that were similar to amphetamines. Although not as potent as amphetamines, these pills had more of an appetite-reducing effect than caffeine. 

The diet pills developed to replace amphetamines became known as anorectics or appetite suppressants and are central nervous system stimulants. The FDA approved phentermine in 1959, fenfluramine in 1973, and dexfenfluramine in 1996. 

Amphetamine stimulates the central nervous system, which suppresses the appetite. Most diet pills are sympathomimetics. They are similar to amphetamines, but are less powerful and have less potential for addiction. The sympathomimetics are benzphetamine, diethylpropion, mazindol, methamphetamine, phendimetrazine, phentermine, and sibutramine. 

The CSA classifies the methamphetamine Des-oxyn as a stimulant. Anorectic drugs, the diet pills developed to replace amphetamines, are regarded by the government as controlled substances. While these drugs are not as powerful as amphetamines, their effects are similar.

Amphetamines, or stimulant drugs, become popular as diet pills. Serious side effects and withdrawal symptoms cause its popularity to fade. Approval for weight loss use is eventually reversed. 

Contraindications If taken too close to bedtime may cause insomnia. If taken while physically exhausted hypotensive properties may be sharply exaggerated. Should not be used by persons with ailment or injury of kidneys, liver, or heart, or inclination towards diabetes or hypoglycemia. MAO inhibitor (see list of dangerous combinations). Anxiety may also occur. Sodium amobarbitol or Librium alleviate this. Imipramine may worsen it. Nauseau may occur from ingestion of yohimbine, but is not likely when snuffed. Can result in heart palpitations, severe blood pressure drop, and breathing difficulties if taken within 48 hours of having taken any amphetamine, even Dexamyl type diet pill. 

Among the materials which may be dangerous in combination with MAO inhibitors are sedatives, tranquilizers, antihistamines, narcotics, and alcohol -- any of which can cause hypotensive crisis (severe blood pressure drop) and amphetamines (even diet pills), mescaline, asarone, nutmeg (active doses), macromerine, ephedrine oils of dill, parsely or wild fennel beer, wine, cocoa, aged cheeses, and other tyrosine-containing foods (tyrosine is converted into tyramine by bacteria in the bowel) -- any of which can cause hypotensive or hypertensive (severe blood pressure rise) crises. 

In November 1976, CBS s "Sixty Minutes" news feature program accused Pennwalt of marketing amphetamine-based diet pills, with the deliberate objective of creating a "hooked" market of dependent amphetamine users. Commentator Mike Wallace cited a 1970 Pennwalt internal memorandum to substantiate this allegation.

Many over-the-counter diet pills contain low doses of amphetamines.

Thus patients who are genetically slow acetylators will have elevated serum levels and prolonged drug effects. Low likelihood of abuse. Potentiate the effects of sympathomimetics (including tyramine present in dairy and yeast products, amphetamines in diet pills, and sympathomimetics in cold remedies). Amphetamine-like structure.
