FIGURE 6.7 Steps in oil shale retorting are shown. Oil shale is erushed and then heated in a retort to drive off the oil that is trapped in the roek. Any oil left behind, as well as partieulates returned to the process as the reeovered oil is processed, is burned to provide heat for the retorting. Ultraforming A catalytic reforming process developed by Standard Oil of Indiana and licensed by Amoco Oil Company. The catalyst contains platinum and rhenium, contained in a swing reactor - one that can be isolated from the rest of the equipment so that the catalyst can be regenerated while the unit is operating. The first unit was commissioned in 1954.

Prior to polymerization, p-xylene is first oxidized to terephthalic acid (TA) or dimethyl terephtalate (DMT). These diacid or dimethyl ester monomers are then polymerized via a condensation reaction with ethylene glycol to form the polyester. Prior to the development of a method to purify TA to make purified terephtahc acid (PTA, >99% pure) by the Mid-Century Corporation in the 1950s [10], DMT was the primary way to obtain the purified dicarboxylate. The Amoco Oil Company, now part of BP International, made several improvements to the PTA process since its inception [11]. Since the advent of the availability of PTA, it has become the monomer of choice over DMT. PTA avoids the complications of including methanol to enable purification and handling the methanol evolved during the polymerization to polyester.

I was fortunate enough to see some of the earlier versions and later I obtained a compilation of topics in Process Safety Booklets, 6th ed., 1984, Amoco Oil Company Refining and Engineering. The sixth edition was a hard-backed book that contained nine previously published booklets, but the newest series overshadows the previous editions.

It is a superior book intended as a safety supplement to operator training courses, operating manuals, and operating procedures. The first edition of these booklets appeared over 40 years ago. The text is a real value at about 50.
