X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These studies were performed at the Amoco research center at Naperville, Illinois, by Dr. Theo Fleisch. A Hewlett Packard 5950B ESCA spectrometer was employed using a monochromated A1 source. Sample wafers were pressed from approximately 50 mg of catalyst powder, and placed in a pretreatment chamber attached to the spectrometer.

Understanding the nuances of the oxidation chemistry is very important for effective technology development, and this has been achieved from many years of research. The chemistry of Co-Br and Co-Mn-Br catalysis has been studied by many over the last 60 years. Our understanding of the mechanism as we herein describe is based on published research and internal research conducted over the years at the BP Amoco Naperville Center and in collaborations with partners.
