Allyl diglycol carbonate (CR-39) is the most highly scratch resistant of the transparent plastics. Unlike most of the other transparent plastics that are TP, CR-39 is a TS plastic that has been in use for over a half century in applications such as bullet-proof shields, high temperature steel blast furnace eye and face guards, aircraft window side panels, etc. Processing methods include injection molding and casting. [Pg.236]

Uses. There are about forty to fifty organic peroxides commercially available in more than seventy formulations designed for specific applications which include (1) initiators for vinyl monomer polymerizations, and copolymerizations of monomers such as vinyl chloride, ethylene, styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylics, fluoroolefms and buta-dienestyrene (2) curing agents for thermoset polyesters, styrenated alkyds and oils, silicone rubbers and poly allyl diglycol carbonates ... [Pg.681]

Dr. Crano received a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1957 from Notre Dame and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University in 1959 and 1962, respectively. He joined PPG Industries in 1961, and had spent his entire career with that firm, at first in various roles in the Chemical Research Development area. In 1974 PPG began research upon means to impart photochromic properties to ophthalmic lenses made from plastics, in particular from poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), CR-39 . Plastic lenses command over 85% of the total ophthalmic market in the US, principally because a lightweight plastic product is more comfortable to wear and permits more attractive fashion designs. [Pg.384]

Besides classical inorganic glasses, there are certain optical plastics that are employed in the transparency and eyewear industry. For instance, thermoset resins based on allyl diglycol carbonate, poly(methyl methacrylate) derivatives, and bis-phenol A polycarbonates have been used to produce commercial plastic non-photochromic and photochromic lenses. As far as has been disclosed by the manufacturers, indolinospironaphthoxazines, INSO, and pyridobenzoxazines. [Pg.136]

Other minor uses include bonding polyester laminates to polyester or to metal, and as adhesives for optical equipment. CR-39 allyl diglycol carbonate is an example of the latter. This material, in the cured condition, exhibits improved abrasion and chemical resistance over other transparent adhesive resins and displays the good heat resistance and dimensional stability associated with thermosetting systems. These properties are retained on prolonged exposure to severe environmental conditions. CR-39, which stands for Columbia Resin 39, is an allyl resin, a special type of unsaturated polyester. ... [Pg.108]
