Allyl resin

A number of useful resins have been prepared from allyl compounds, i.e. derivatives of allyl alcohol CH2 = CH CH20H. One of these, diethylene glycol 

Polymers of N, N, N, A-diaUyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) (and its copolymers with acrylamide) are aUyl resins in terms of the monomers used but are very different in properties since they are not crosslinked. Cyclopolymerization is the mode of reaction (Sec. 6-6b) and the polymers are water-soluble. Applications include potable and wastewater treatment (flocculation aid) and paper and textile industries (antistatic coating, reinforcement, color removal).

At about the same time, an allyl resin known as CR39 was introdueed in the United States as a low-pressure laminating resin. This was followed in about 1946 with the introduction of unsaturated polyester laminating resins which are today of great importance in the manufaeture of glass-reinforced plasties. Alkyd moulding powders were introduced in 1948 and have since found specialised applications as electrical insulators.

The resins known as DAP and DAIP, are cross linked allyl esters of phthalic and rsophthalic acid, respectively. They are notable for rigidity and excellent electrical properties at temperatures up to 4.50" F. Allylic resin-impregnated glass cloth is used in aircraft and missile parl.s. Other... 

In spite of these excellent properties, allyl resins are, however, quite brittle and have a rather limited application,... 

In this sense, the development of allyl resins with improved flexibility would be required for versatile applications. 

ALLYL ESTER RESINS. The allyl radical (CH2CH=CH2) is the basis of the allyl family of resins. Allyl esters arc based on monobasic and dibasic acids and are available as low-viscosity monomers and thermoplastic prepolymers. They are used as crosslinking agents for unsaluraied polyester resins and in the preparation of reinforced thermoset molding compounds and high-performance transparent articles. All modem thermoset techniques may be used for processing allyl resins. 

Secondly, we have extended the investigation of network formation in allyl resins further to common multivinyl systems typically exemplified by EDMA. 

Here we will extend the above discussion of network formation in allyl resins to the polymerization of common multivinyl compounds accompanied by gelation since allyl compounds are rather a special type vinyl compound and our findings are not always in conformity with the results reported by other woricers on network formation in common multivinyl polymerizations. 

Use Monomer for allyl resins, particularly in optically clear castings.
