Alka-Seltzer aspirin sodium bicarbonate. Alkeran melphalan. allantoin [ban, usan) (glyoxylic dlureide) occurs in allantoic fluid. It is a product of purine metabolism, very widely distributed in biological systems, including numerous plants. It has antiinflammatory activity and was formerly used topically as a dermatological agent in preparations for the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions (though its efficacy is disputed).

Each Alka-Seltzer tablet contains 1916 mg of sodium bicarbonate, 1000 mg of citric acid (Fig. 9.1.2), and 325 mg of aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid (Fig. 9.1.3). Bromo Seltzer also contains sodium bicarbonate and citric acid as well as acetaminophen (Fig. 9.1.4). Several equilibria describe the action of bicarbonate-based antacid tablets. First of all, sodium bicarbonate dissolves completely in aqueous solution to generate sodium ions and bicarbonate ions ...

Aspirin has some beneficial effects when mixed with caffeine, because caffeine increases the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of aspirin. Brand names of pain relievers that combine aspirin and caffeine include Alka-Seltzer , Anacin , and Cope Analgesic Pain Reliever.

Aspirin is found in more than 100 common medications, including Alka-Seltzer, Anacin ( contains the pain reliever doctors recommend most ), Coricidin, Excedrin, Midol, and Vanquish. Despite its side effects, aspirin remains the safest, cheapest, and most effective nonprescription drug. It is made commercially, employing the same synthesis used here.

Alka-Seltzer contains sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, citric acid, and aspirin. The fizz of the Alka-Seltzer tablet in water is carbon dioxide gas given off by the reaction of the citric acid with the bicarbonates to give carbonic acid (the preceding reaction). 

Sodium bicarbonate, sold as baking soda, can be dissolved in water directly and taken as an antacid. It can also be purchased as Alka-Seltzer, a combination of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, and aspirin. The citric acid reacts with some of the bicarbonate ions to produce gaseous CO2, the familiar fizz ... 

A new salicylate eledrode based on polymer membranes was used in a flow injection analysis system [66]. The electrode membrane contains 29.2-31.0% of PVC, 5.8-6.3% of tetraoctylammonium salicylate, 58.5-62.7% of o-nitrophenyloctylether and 6.5% of p-ferf-octylphenol. The tubular electrode was stored for approx. 6 months in a sodium salicylate solution. The electrode shows the slope of response curve close to theoretical — 56.0 0.6 mV decade in the range of 5 x 10" -10" mol L the response time is up to 5 s. The electrode can be used in a pH range of 6-9. The log K selectivity coefficients are 2-2.9 for acetates, 1.8-2.2 for chlorates, 0.7-1.0 for nitrates and 0.6-1.3 for acetosalicylates. The tubular salicylate electrode can be used for determination of acetylsalicylic add, after its previous analysis to salicylate, in multicomponent preparations and effervescent tablets (Anadin Extra, Aspirin, Dolviran, Alka-Seltzer). The results of potentiometric measurements are consistent with the method used in pharmacopoeia 100.7 to 103% of the compound was obtained, with standard deviation of RSD 0.6-1.8%. 

Alka-Seltzer tablets contain aspirin, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid. When they come into contact with water, the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO ) and citric acid (H3C6H5O7) react to form carbon dioxide gas, among other products. 

Considerable attention has recently been given to the problem of aspirin-induced asthma. About 25% of asthmatics seem to be intolerant of aspirin (Table 1) yet the fact that it causes or aggravates asthma is frequently overlooked (35 ). Many patients do not even seem to Imow that Alka-Seltzer contains aspirin and ingestion of this popular preparation has been associated with asthma (42 ).
