Compound 1080 was also effective against jackrabbits, foxes, and moles. Baits containing 0.05 to 0.1% 1080 on vegetables were used in California to kill jackrabbits (Lepus spp.) and various rodents (Schitoskey 1975). The Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus), intentionally introduced onto the Aleutian Islands in 1835 (Bailey 1993), almost eliminated the Aleutian Canada goose (Branta canadensis leucoparlia) by 1967. 1080-tallow baits were successfully used to control fox populations (Byrd et al. 1988 Tietjen et al. 1988 Bailey 1993). Earthworm baits are used to kill moles. The earthworms are soaked for 45 min in a 2.5% solution of 1080 and placed in mole burrows. The solution can be used several times for additional lots of worms however, the use of the manure worm (Eisenia foetida) should be avoided because it is seldom eaten by moles (Peacock 1964).

Disorders similar to CHS in humans have been reported in beige mice, Aleutian mink, Hereford cattle and killer whales, and neutrophil dysfunctions similar to those reported in humans are apparent in these animals. Therapy of CHS in humans usually consists of careful management of infections with appropriate antibiotics, although improvements have been reported following administration of high doses of ascorbic acid. Bone-marrow transplantation offers some hope to these patients, especially those entering the accelerated phase of the disease. 

In the Pacific Ocean it occurs in British Columbia (10), some coastal locations in the Gulf of Alaska (pers. Obs. and figs, in 21), Unimak Is. in the Aleutians (unpubl. obs., 1965), and bays in north eastern Japan (14,30 ). A population from the northeast coast of North Island, New Zealand, which appeared after fish and shellfish kills, resembled tamarensis, but had an unusually narrow sixth precing-...

Island arc A chain of volcanic islands that are commonly associated with the subduction of an oceanic plate underneath another oceanic plate (ocean-ocean convergence zone). The Aleutian Islands of Alaska are an example of an island arc. 

Many studies focus on paleoelevations attending continent-continent collisions, yet arc processes are fundamentally important to tectonics, both because arcs precede such collisions and because paleoelevation provides information about an arc lithosphere s thermal and chemical state. Clearly different arcs behave differently with respect to elevations, as even long-lived arcs such as the Aleutians (40-50 Myr of activity) can have relatively little topographic expression outside of individual volcanoes, whereas, as we describe below, events within the last 7 Myr appear to have elevated the Oregon Cascades. 

On a fish tender vessel of not more than 500 GT engaged in the Aleutian trade, the licensed individuals and crew members shall be divided into at least three watches. However, if the vessel operated in that trade before September 8, 1990, or was purchased to be used in that trade before September 8, 1990, and entered into that trade before June 1, 1992, the licensed individuals and crew members may be divided into two watches.
