Exceptions to the general rule of macrofaunal biomass decrease with depth and distance from land are the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans and deeper water off upwelling areas with a particularly high production in the euphotic zone. Most trenches close to the continents and larger islands are also relatively rich in fauna, probably because the trenches act as traps for organic material (Wolff, 1977).
