Alcohol, potential

Glycine receptor function is modulated by alcohols and anesthetics [4]. Amino acid residue al(S267) is critical for alcohol potentiation, as mutation to small residues (Gly, Ala) enhance, and mutation to large residues (His, Cys, Tyr) diminish the ethanol effect. Glycine recqrtor modulation by Zn2+ involves structural determinants located within the large N-terminal domain. Additional glycinergic modulators include neuroactive steroids and the anthelmintic, ivermectin, which activates glycine receptors by a novel, strychnine-insensitive mechanism. [Pg.556]

Most sedative drugs, including narcotics and alcohol, potentiate the sedative effects of benzodiazepines. In addition, medications that inhibit hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A3/4 increase blood levels and hence side effects of clonazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, and triazolam. Lorazepam, oxazepam, and temazepam are not dependent on hepatic enzymes for metabolism. Therefore, they are not affected by hepatic disease or the inhibition of hepatic enzymes. [Pg.74]

So-called alcohol potentiation the sedative action of tranquillizers is potentiated by alcohol. Relevant impairments are possible after a combined intake of tranquillizer doses and amounts of alcohol that when taken alone would produce no detectable actions (Mattila, 1984)... [Pg.21]

Cyanamide also acts as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which results in a disulfiram-like reaction in individuals concomitantly exposed to alcohol. Potentiated by the ingestion of alcohol, the accumulation of acetaldehyde in the body presents as a syndrome of vasodilation characterized by facial flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, sweating, chest pain, hypotension, weakness, blurred vision, and confusion. Calcium cyanamide has been used in aversion therapy for alcoholism. [Pg.696]

Benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines (2) (see Table 5.3) in low doses have a sedative effect however, in higher doses, they induce sleep and may even lead to coma. The sedative effect of benzodiazepinesimpairs motor skills, attention, memory, judgment, and if severe, may lead to confusionand incoordination. The risk of accidents is increased, including an increase of road traffic accidents. Consumption of alcohol potentiates the effects of benzodiazepines. [Pg.206]

The mechanism of this interaction is not understood. It has been proposed that tacrolimus may act on the same biochemical pathway as alcohol potentiating a capsaicin-mediated release of neuropeptides, which increase vasodilatory effects. Alternatively, cutaneous aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibition in areas where tacrolimus has been applied may increase cutaneous aldehyde levels that, through prostaglandins as mediators, could lead to vasodilation following alcohol consumption. - ... [Pg.78]

These techniques, similarly to drying and cryoex-traction, consist of eliminating part of the water contained in grapes or in must. Two physical processes can be used water evaporation, or selective separation across a semi-permeable membrane (reverse osmosis). European legislation has set the limits for these treatments a 20% maximum volume decrease and a 2% volume maximum alcohol potential increase. [Pg.310]

Some of the things that George Flyim was saying about the outcomes for people who d been in special education joblessness, alcoholism, potential for crime, vulnerability. . . aU those things hit me very powerfully at a time when I was personally feeling quite vulnerable. And also I think that the sense of - there was an alternative to the special school. And it affected me a lot. [Pg.84]
