Air and water pollution control

Beneficiation faciUties require air and water pollution control systems, including efficient control of dust emissions, treatment of process water, and proper disposal of tailings (see AiRPOLLUTlON CONTROLMETHODS). In handling finished fluorspar, operators must avoid breathing fluorspar dust and contacting fluorspar with acids. Proper disposal of spills and the use of respirators and other personnel protective equipment must be observed. Contact with fluorspar may irritate the skin and eyes.

Administers research in areas significant to chemical manufacturing such as air and water pollution control operates Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC) to control and report chemical accidents. ACC is organized by industrial groups and also by issue groups that sen>e as coordinators and advocators in their fields of specializations.

Research and development investments in the group amounted to around MSEK 210 in 1997. It is estimated that approximately MSEK 65 of these have a direct or indirect fink to the environment. These investments include the projects concerning bleaching, air and water pollution control, and ecocycles that are for the most part being pursued on a joint sectoral basis.
