Among other polysaccharides studied were those elaborated by Neisseria per-flava (starch-type polysaccharide), Polytomella coeca (a starch richer in amy-lopectin than most natural starches), Pseudomonas morsprunorum (Wormald) (levan), Acetobacter acetigenum (cellulose), Aerobacter aerogenes (NCTC 8172) (Klebsiella Type 164), Bacillus megaterium. Bacterium pruni, and Bacterium prunicola (polyfructoses of the levan type). [Pg.8]

The degradation of DDT by organisms designated Aerobacter aerogenes (possibly Klebsiella aerogenes) (Wedemeyer 1967) (Figure 2.6), and the partial reductive dechlorination of methoxychlor by K. pneumoniae (Baarschers et al. 1982). [Pg.67]

The catechol-type ligand appears to be restricted to siderochromes derived from prokaryotic microorganisms. Klebsiella oxytoca, an organism closely related to members of the genus Aerobacter, forms the 2,3-dihy-droxy-N-benzoyl derivates of serine and threonine in three day cultures (72). It is not known if the latter amino acid occurs in trimers but examination of space-filling CPK models does indicate that enterobactin could accomodate a methyl substituent on the carbon of the serine residue. Catechols occur in higher protist organisms but their formation... [Pg.160]

The final step is a hydrolyzing step with sulfatase enzymes (E.C. number 3.1.6.1), such as limpet sulfatase, Aerobacter aerogenes sulfatase, Abalone entrail sulfatase, or Helixpomatia sulfatase. This step was suggested to be carried out in a CSTR or fluidized bed reactors, with counter-current flow between the aqueous and the oil phase. A more efficient removal of the sulfate into the aqueous stream is expected to occur in this cross-flow manner. A final separation of the reacting mixture was suggested to obtain sulfur-free product and aqueous enzyme solution for recycle. [Pg.328]

When grown in a mineral medium containing KDO as the only source of carbon, cells of Aerobacter cloacae can be induced to produce an enzyme that catalyzes the cleavage of KDO to give D-arabinose and pyruvic acid.89 This enzyme was purified 60-fold by Ghalambor and Heath.154 It has a pH optimum of 7, a KM = 6 mM, and an equilibrium constant of 77 mM. The reversible nature of the enzyme reaction can be utilized to synthesize 14C-labelled KDO from D-arabinose plus 14C-pyruvic acid. Cleavage of KDO as catalyzed by KDO aldolase has... [Pg.386]

It did not deviate from the values found with pure cultures (Freudenreich and Orla-Jensen 1906 van Niel 1928). The analytical methods allowed the determination of the products of glucose fermentation by Escherichia coli, and the general equation calculated (Harden 1901) does not differ from that accepted today. Harden even correctly deduced that hydrogen arises from formic acid the Aerobacter modihcation was recognized by Harden in 1906. Thus the methods for the analysis of fermentation products were completed within the nineteenth century. [Pg.16]
