Most gas-fired, heavy-duty gas turbines installed as of 1996 operate at gas pressures between 1.2 and 1.7 MPa (180—250 psig). However, aero derivative gas turbines and newer heavy-duty units can have such high air-inlet compression ratios as to require booster compressors to raise gas inlet pressures, in some cases as high as 5.2 MPa (750 psig). [Pg.17]

Nickel and its alloys form another important class of non-ferrous metals (Table 1.3). The superb creep resistance of the nickel-based superalloys is a key factor in designing the modern gas-turbine aero-engine. But nickel alloys even appear in a model steam engine. The flat plates in the firebox must be stayed together to resist the internal steam pressure (see Fig. 1.3). Some model-builders make these stays from pieces of monel rod because it is much stronger than copper, takes threads much better and is very corrosion resistant. [Pg.7]

Mechanical Drives. Mechanical drive gas turbines are widely used to drive pumps and compressors. Their application is widely used by offshore and petrochemical industrial complexes. These turbines must be operated at various speeds and thus usually have a gasifier section and a power section. These units in most cases are aero-derivative turbines, turbines, which were originally designed for aircraft application. There are some smaller frame type units, which have been converted to mechanical drive units with a gasifier and power turbine. [Pg.143]

In the search for higher plant thermal efficiency, the simplicity of the two basic STIG and EGT cycles, as described by Frutschi and Plancherel, has to some extent been lost in the substantial modifications described above. But there have been other less complex proposals for water injection into the simple unrecuperated open cycle gas turbine one simply involves water injection at entry to the compressor, and is usually known as inlet fog boosting (IFB) the other involves the front part of an RWI cycle, i.e. water injection in an evaporative intercooler, usually in a high pressure ratio aero-derivative gas turbine plant. [Pg.103]

The performance characteristics of a lubricating oil depend on its origin and on the refining processes employed, and in order to ensure consistent properties these are varied as little as possible. It has been known for many years that the human brain is dependent for its norman functioning on a regular input of sensory stimuli. Sensory deprivation leads to hallucinations and finally to mental breakdown. The use of these sensory deprivation techniques by British forces in Northern Ireland(Ref 7) was the subject of an official investigation (Ref 4). This commission concluded that physical torture had not been used. Warming may have a beneficial effect. For instance, the temperature of fluids atomized in air-jet nebulizers decreases by approximately 10-15°C during use, resulting in bronchoconstriction in some asthma suffers.Bronchoconstriction, which is most marked at 5°C, disappears at 37°C and thus may be minimized by using an ultrasonic device. Furthermore, when solutions of drugs with low solubility are to be nebulized, ultrasonic nebulizers, which warm the solutions, may be preferable to air-jet devices, which cool them and may cause precipitation. However, the heat generated may harm heat-labile materials such as diethylenetriaminepentoacetic acid ( mTc-/DTPA), " proteins, and some antibiotic solutions. Thus, ultrasonic nebulizers are specifically prohibited for aero-solization of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase). ... [Pg.3858]

Some microorganisms may resemble the higher organisms in being able to convert phenylalanine directly to tyrosine thus it can occur in Vibrio (167) and Pseudomonas (605) and has been claimed for E. coli (48 but cf. 807). However in Lactobacillus arabinosus tyrosine is formed by a route not involving phenylalanine (20), as is apparently also the case in Aero-bacter aerogenes (605). The direct conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine is claimed by advocates of the straight-chain pathway of aromatic biosynthesis described later. [Pg.40]

AERO LIQUID HCN (74-90-8) Can be self-reactive, forming an explosive mixture with air (flash point 0°F/—18°C). Unless inhibited, material stored more than 90 days may be hazardous. Heat above 356°F/180°C or contact with alkalis or amines can cause explosive polymerization. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers, acetaldehyde. Solutions eontaining more than 2-5% water are less stable than dry material. Acid solutions react with ammonia, ferric oxide, halogens, ozone. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Water solutions attack carbon steels at room temperatures and stainless steels (especially if stabilized with sulfuric acid) above 176°F/80°C. [Pg.45]

In order to verify that the RFS technique can detect, particles greater than 10 pra, the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Oil Analysis Program Technical Support Center (JOAP-TSC) prepared samples using M50 alloy particles. M50 alloy is often present in aero-derivative turbines. Some failure modes of J52 engines appear to be sudden catastrophic failures where the root cause began with the lack of lubrication of the 4 A bearing area. Initially, analysis of the samples by RDE spectroscopy did not indicate the failure mode [6]. The composition and specifications for MSO alloy are as shown below (Table 3). [Pg.77]
