Advances in fundamental knowledge of adsorption equihbrium and mass transfer will enable further optimization of the performance of existing adsorbent types. Continuing discoveries of new molecular sieve materials will also provide adsorbents with new combinations of useflil properties. New adsorbents and adsorption processes will be developed to provide needed improvements in pollution control, energy conservation, and the separation of high value chemicals. New process cycles and new hybrid processes linking adsorption with other unit operations will continue to be developed. [Pg.287]

Adsorption (qv) of gases has been reviewed (40,50) (see also Adsorption, gas separation). Adsorption, used alone or in combination with other removal methods, is excellent for removing pollutant gases to extremely low concentrations, eg, 1 ppmv. When used in combination, it is typically the final step. Adsorption, always exothermic, is even more attractive when very large gas volumes must be made almost pollutant free. Because granular adsorbent beds ate difficult to cool because of poor heat transfer, gas precooling is often practiced to minimize adsorption capacity loss toward the end of the bed. Adsorption. Adsorption (qv) is an effective means of lowering the concentration of dissolved organics in effluent. Activated carbon is the most widely used and effective adsorbent for dyes (4) and, it has been extensively studied in the waste treatment of the different classes of dyes, ie, acid, direct, basic, reactive, disperse, etc (5—22). Commercial activated carbon can be prepared from lignite and bituminous coal, wood, pulp mill residue, coconut shell, and blood and have a surface area ranging from 500—1400 m /g (23). The feasibiUty of adsorption on carbon for the removal of dissolved organic pollutants has been demonstrated by adsorption isotherms (24) (see Carbon, activated carbon). Several pilot-plant and commercial-scale systems using activated carbon adsorption columns have been developed (25—27). [Pg.381]

This cany-off of film drops, which may also occur with breakiug foam, in certain cases can partially convert water pollution into air pollution. if such is the case, it may be desirable to recirculate the gas. Adsorption-Control Equipment If a gas stream must be treated for a short period, nsnally only one adsorption unit is necessary, provided, of course, that a sufficient time interval is available between adsorption cycles to permit regeneration. However, this is usually not the case. Since an nninternipted flow of treated gas is often required, it is necessary to employ one or more units capable of operating in this fashion. The units are designed to handle gas flows without interruption and are charac terized by their mode of contact, either staged or continuous. Although the continuous-countercurrent type of operation has found limited application in the removal of gaseous pollutants from process streams (Tor example, the removal of carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide), by far the most common type of operation presently in use is the fixed-bed adsorber. The relatively high cost of continuously transporting solid particles as required in steady-state operations makes fixed-bed adsorption an attractive, economical alternative. If intermittent or batch operation is practical, a simple one-bed system, cycling alternately between the adsorption and regeneration phases, 1 suffice. [Pg.2187]

Both kinetic and equilibrium experimental methods are used to characterize and compare adsorption of aqueous pollutants in active carbons. Flue gas treatment (FGT) is more effective in reducing NO, emissions than are combustion controls, although at higher cost. FGT is also useful where combustion controls are not applicable.
