Bortner and Baird [89] uthhzed a pressurized capillary rheometer to investigate the viscosity reduction of an acrylonitrile copolymer (65 wt% AN) under CO2. The system was modified by the addition of a sealed chamber at the capillary exit to allow a static pressure to be applied, preventing CO2 loss and thus ensuring that phase separation did not occur. Control of the static pressure was maintained with an adjustable pressure relief valve. At 6.7 wt% CO2, the Tg was depressed by 31 °C (confirmed by DSC), with an associated viscosity reduction of 60%. [Pg.220]

Valves. Valves control the way the gas is used, stopped, or directed. They must function under a variety and range of temperatures. Control or proportional valves in a process system are power-operated mechanisms able to alter fluid flow. A pneumatic valve actuator adjusts valve position by making the air pressure either linear or rotary motion. Ball valves provide the shutoff capability. Gas valves are specialized to control the flow of another medium, such as natural gas. A pressure relief valve is a self-actuated safety valve that relieves pressure. The hood pressure control system functions as follows When the pressure in the hood rises, which may occur for example as a result of a decrease in the exit gas flow or an increase in the cooling air flow, the controller increases the volume of air delivered by the exhaust air fan. The soft-seated spring-loaded pilot valve is so constructed as to have a long built-in blowdown. For a flowing type pilot, at the point where the pilot supply line feeds the system pressure to the pilot relief valve, it passes through a variable orifice, which is also the main valve blowdown adjustment. When the pilot opens, the flow through the supply line causes an immediate pressure drop across the orifice. By adjusting the size of the orifice and thus the amount of pressure drop across it, one can obtain any desired system blowdown (5 to 7% is typical). [Pg.163]

I used to reset relief valves on small-pressure vessels in the natural-gas fields in southern Texas. After adjusting the nut on the valve with a wrench, I would raise the vessel pressure to check whether the valve would relieve at the proper pressure. If not, I would continue to adjust the nut and, by trial and error, find the proper relief-valve setting. Smaller rotary positive displacement compressors are controlled with external bypass. There are very special resilient-seated cryogenic SRVs on the market (some initially developed for NASA), bubble tight up to 98% of set pressure, with a snap opening at 101% of set pressure and adjustable blowdowns between 3% and 25%. If you do not want to spend the money for these very special valves, then at least consider a soft-seated relief valve with a snap action. [Pg.263]

Note The API is commissioning a study to evaluate the dynamics of relief valve behaviour for various inlet and outlet pressure-drop scenarios. One should be cautioned that various experts in this area hold very strong yet contradictory opinions on this topic. However, it is the opinion of the author that with a good selection of the correct SRV, these differences of opinion are eliminated. It is wise to work on the safe side and allow the valve to overcome the possible pressure losses by selecting SRVs with good adjustable, known and tested blowdowns. [Pg.286]
