Adhesion corrosion

Epoxy resins are widely used in high-strength adhesives, corrosion-resistant coatings, and corrosion-resistant pipes and tanks. The simplest starting material for these thermoset polymers is made from phenol, acetone (to bisphenol A), and epichlorohydrin. [Pg.132]

A growing specialty application for acrylonitrile is in the manufacture of carbon fibres. These are produced by pyrolysis of oriented polyacrylonitrile fibres and are used to reinforce composites for high-performance applications in the aircraft, defence and aerospace industries. Other minor specialty applications of acrylonitrile are in the production of fatty amines, ion exchange resins and fatty amine amides used in cosmetics, adhesives, corrosion inhibitors and water-treatment resins (Brazdil, 1991). [Pg.47]

When a corrosive medium contacts the edge of a bonded joint and finds an extremely active surface, such as that produced by a fresh acid treatment of the metal substrate to improve adhesion, corrosion at the metal-adhesives interface can occur. This initial corrosion and the subsequent penetration can take several forms. [Pg.198]

The usual approach to good bonding practice is to prepare the aluminum surface as thoroughly as possible, then wet it with the adhesive as soon afterward as practical. In any event, aluminum parts should ordinarily be bonded within 48 h after surface preparation. However, in certain applications this may not be practical, and primers are used to protect the surface between the time of treatment and the time of bonding. Primers are also applied as a low-viscosity solution which wets a metal surface more effectively than more viscous, higher-solids-content adhesives. Corrosion-resistant epoxy primers are often used to protect the etched surface during assembly operations. Primers for epoxy adhesive systems are described in Chap. 10. [Pg.350]

Epoxy resins are superior in heat resistance, adhesion, corrosion resistance and also mechanical properties among thermosetting resins and are widely used for coatings, adhesives, electric insulating materials and matrices for FRP in areas such as aircrafts, electronics, electric power, and building and civil engineering. [Pg.174]

The reactive epoxies form a tight, cross-linked polymer network and are characterized by toughness, good adhesion, corrosive-chemical resistance, and good dielectric properties. [Pg.507]

In most cases, the substrates are metals, such as copper, aluminum, etc. The pretreatment of the metal substrate is critical to its performance. In some cases, a primer is applied to impart adhesion, corrosion, and delamination resistance. [Pg.2388]

Plasma is effective in the fabrication of nanocomposites, such as nanoparticles composed of one material and covered by a nanolayer of another. Relevant examples include, in particular, carbon-coated magnetic metal particles produced in thermal arc plasma (McHenry et al., 1994), as well as polymer-coated nanoparticles with improved adhesion, corrosion resistance, and surface passivation produced in RF plasma in a fluidized bed (Shi et al.,... [Pg.580]

There are other mechanisms such as fretting, fretting corrosion, and fretting CF, which is a combination of adhesive, corrosive, and abrasive forms of wear. Wear by all mechanisms except fatigue mechanism, occurs by gradual removal of material. One or more of these mechanisms may be operating in a particular machine. In many cases, wear may be initiated by one mechanism but may proceed by other mechanisms and thereby complicate failure analysis (60). [Pg.46]
