Adaptation techniques

While startup and shutdown occur relatively infrequently in large continuous plants, they are inherent in batch plant operation. Most startup and shutdown procedures, whether devised empirically or theoretically, are designed to follow a recipe of actions with no feedback. Thus, if upsets occur, there is often no way to change the startup or shutdown in time to avoid imwanted process exclusions. Procedures are needed that incorporate feedback and adaptive techniques to the problem of plant startup and shutdown. [Pg.162]

Today, the scientific community can identify tiny trace amounts of chemicals in the environment. A quarter-century after Wallace Carothers introduced science-based industrial research to the United States, Clair Patterson adapted techniques developed for determining the age of the Earth to identify microtraces of global pollutants. Today scientists can analyze industrial contaminants in the parts per billion in 1991 when a university scientist discovered in the atmosphere a harmful, low-level contaminant produced by the manufacture of nylon, industry volunteered within weeks to change production methods. [Pg.199]

A potentially much more adaptable technique is force-field vibrational modeling. In this method, the effective force constants related to distortions of a molecule (such as bond stretching) are used to estimate unknown vibrahonal frequencies. The great advantage of this approach is that it can be applied to any material, provided a suitable set of force constants is known. For small molecules and complexes, approximate force constants can often be determined using known (if incomplete) vibrational specha. These empirical force-field models, in effect, represent a more sophisticated way of exhapolating known frequencies than the rule-based method. A simple type of empirical molecular force field, the modified Urey-Bradley force field (MUBFF), is introduced below. [Pg.79]

Developing hedgerows of fodder trees should also be practiced on rainfed agricultural fields on sloping terrain, since this is another effective adaptation technique that reduces the risk of slope failure and soil erosion. [Pg.270]

Adapting techniques based on in vitro protein synthesis to the isolation of enzymes requires establishing a link between a nucleic acid-protein complex and product formation. Methods based on binding, analogous to those developed for phage displayed libraries, may be used to enrich catalysts from noncatalysts. In addition, Tawfik and Griffiths (1998) exploited the aqueous core of reverse micelles as artificial compartments... [Pg.297]

The advantages of heterogeneous solid phase in combinatorial chemistry, especially in terms of purification procedures, can be obtained also by solution-phase chemistry, using solid support assistance. The resin performs a specific function during the library synthesis and then is simply removed by filtration, leaving the pure library components in solution. A well-known adapted technique uses solid supported reagents or catalysts during a combinatorial synthesis, where the solid phase is filtered off and discarded after the reaction in which it was involved. A new application is represented by solid-phase purification, where one or more solid supports are added to trap the excess of... [Pg.122]

In this chapter we will describe some of our initial evaluation work on Paraho shale oil. This initial evaluation was not performed in depth rather, this first step consisted of chemical characterizations and high-spot, bench-scale processing of oil shale and several other syncrudes for direct comparisons of chemical feedstocks potential. Conventional analytical and petroleum processing techniques were used in the expectation that these would provide reference data on which to base specifically adapted techniques for evaluations of individual syncrudes. The results represent only our first attempts and except for occasional comparisons, are only for Paraho shale oil. [Pg.98]

Two main classes of optimization methods are available for handling uncertainty. The essential difference relates to whether or not measurements are used in the calculation of the optimal strategy. In the absence of measurements, a robust optimization approach is typically used, whereby conservatism is introduced to guarantee feasibility for the entire range of expected variations [18]. When measurements are available, adaptive optimization can help adjust to process changes and disturbances, thereby reducing conservatism [9]. It is interesting to note that the above classification is similar to that found in control problems with the robust and adaptive techniques. [Pg.5]

Regarding the transmission of audio and video data over networks with limited capacity, a framework was developed to adapt the amount of data transmitted to the currently free capacity. One possible way of reaction to a bottleneck causing packet loss is to use Forward Error Correction [903]. To avoid jitter unacceptable for a continuous playoiit, ]666] and ]802] cover the optimization of transmission and playout of multimedia data streams. Flirthermore, [1017] gives an overview of several other adaptive techniques in multimedia data transmission. The approach realized in IMPROVE partly uses these technologies but additionally covers the applicability in wireless networks for supporting mobile project partners. [Pg.298]

To understand the importance of nanostructures in microsieving membranes, the basic structure of nanophased ceramics must be briefly described. Because the particles are extremely small, one to a few tens of nanometers, an important fraction of the atoms is found in or very near the interface between grains, as reported in Table 2 [32]. Figure 11 is a schematic representation of a nanophase material. One can see that individual grains in the 5 nm range induce a biphasic material with an interfacial phase between the grains and a residual nanoporosity, evidenced by positron lifetime spectroscopy [33]. Transmission electron microscopy is also a well-adapted technique for nanoscale structure characterization, as illustrated later. [Pg.516]

The variable linear filters give the best improvement with the PSF process on the image with or without a source. The application of the filters enables the research of the very weak sources where the systematic effects are very present. Thus, the adaptative technique allows to increase the level of detection in the image. [Pg.193]
