Activation in practice

The US activation concept is realised by legal means in two essential ways by strictly limiting eligibility to only the intended group, and by continuing to encourage self-sufficiency by those in temporary receipt of income support. This chapter focuses on three elements of the US income security system unemployment insurance, social assistance, and tax incentives. [Pg.367]

Unemployment insurance (UI) in the United States is social insurance. It encompasses a blend of principles drawn from private insurance and social welfare. It aims to prevent descent into poverty, not to insure against all wage loss. UI pays benefits to involuntarily unemployed job seekers with sufficient prior earnings who are actively engaged in re-employment efforts. The maximum potential duration of benefits is about half a year, and there is no secondary programme of cash assistance for labour force members who exhaust their UI entitlement. To assure that only insurable joblessness is compensated, there are strict rules governing job separation and continuing unemployment. [Pg.367]

Monetary eligibility can usually be determined at the time of benefit application. Non-monetary eligibility can be reviewed and disputed by the separating employer, who may assert that a worker left voluntarily or was dismissed for misconduct. Continuing eligibility requires a continuous status of able, available, and actively seeking work. [Pg.368]

In most states, the basic eligibility rules therefore have the following components first, an unemployed person usually must have worked recently for a covered employer for a specified period of time and earned a certain amount of wages. Second, the claimant must have become unemployed (or only partially employed) through no fault of their own. Third, a claimant who initially qualifies for benefits must demonstrate on a week-to-week basis that she is able and available for work and is actively seeking a job. State rules requiring job search by UI claimants are commonly called the UI work test. [Pg.368]

Within the pool of unemployed persons, UI recipients are disproportionately older and disproportionately male (Vroman 1997). Workers who tend to be excluded on monetary eligibility grounds are new entrants to the workforce, people returning to the workforce after an extended absence, or workers whose labour [Pg.368]

Which monitoring approach is more effective Generally speaking, an active approach allows more systematic and thorough monitoring of advertisements and promotion activities. In practice, its effectiveness depends on how it is done, and what happens after a violation has been identified. If active monitoring is carried out only sporadically, with minimal in-depth examination of dmg advertisements and promotion, it is unlikely to be effective. If there are no sanctions, or only small fines are imposed when a violation is discovered, then the deterrent effect is minimal. For example, a pharmaceutical... [Pg.100]

At any one instant, only a very small proportion of the total number of unstable nuclei in a radioactive source undergo decay. A Poisson distribution which expresses the result of a large number of experiments in which only a small number are successful, can thus be used to describe the results obtained from measurements on a source of constant activity. In practical terms this means that random fluctuations will always occur, and that the estimated standard deviation, 5, of a measurement can be related to the total measurement by ... [Pg.467]

The standard potential values for solvated copper, as cited in Table 1, represent thermodynamic values in terms of activities. In practice, relatively high ionic strengths (>0.01 M) are used in most electrochemical measurements so that the... [Pg.998]

In principle, this chemisorption method should enable the investigator to count surface sites that are catalytically active. In practice, this does not appear to be the case for most amines. Even in the case of a highly... [Pg.107]

Lorazepam is less lipophilic than diazepam and there is evidence that it has a longer duration of anticonvulsant action than diazepam after intravenous administration. This could be due to the fact that diazepam is more rapidly removed from the brain compartment than lorazepam, which limits its duration of antiepileptic activity. In practice, when diazepam is used to control status epilepticus it is often necessary to continue treatment with diphenylhydantoin, which has a longer duration of action in the brain. The principal hazards of benzodiazepines when given intravenously include respiratory depression and hypotension. Diazepam may be administered rectally, its ease of absorption leading to peak plasma levels within about 10 minutes. [Pg.308]

The activity of the GST-peroxidase (Type 2) is difficult to measure directly and individually, since the observed activity in tissue fractions will be the sum of the glutathione peroxidase and GST activities. In practice, therefore, the GST-peroxidase activity may be obtained by... [Pg.197]

In THF, the alkyllithium compounds are aggregated [157] and the situation is reminiscent of the conditions in hydrocarbon solutions. At high concentrations, the association number (i. e. the number of molecules in the aggregate) decreases. This anomaly is explained by the existence of aggregate—solvent complexes, for example (MeLi)4 8THF Benzyllithium and its polymeric analogue polystyryllithium are not associated. Phenyllithium is mostly present as a dimer or monomer. Both forms are in equilibrium and are solvated. Only the monomeric form of the initiator is active. In practice, benzyllithium reacts only in the form of an ion pair. The fraction of the free benzyl anion must be very small [151c]. [Pg.108]

While pH is strictly the negative logarithm (to the base 10) of H activity, in practice concentration in molL (equivalent to kmol m in SI terminology) is most often used in place of activity, since the two are virtually the same, given the limited dissociation of H2O. The pH scale is not SI nevertheless, it continues to be used widely in chemistry. [Pg.57]

Although your query chemical contains an alert associated with neurotoxicity and QSAR model YYY predicts activity, it is unlikely to be active in practice because it fits much better into the prediction space for QSAR model ZZZ, which was based on a different training set and predicts inactivity, and because its log / is so low that it is unlikely to penetrate biological membranes. ... [Pg.540]

The discipline now also has a cadre of clinical scientists who are fulfilling the typical academic scientist role but in order to accomplish this, these individuals have had to focus primarily on teaching and research with minimal activities in practice. Since the fundamental role of the discipline is to prepare students for actual practice, a cadre of clinical faculty whose primary duties are practice and teaching are therefore also essential. [Pg.3]

In a diffusion-free enzyme reaction the reaction rate increases up to a certain critical value exponentially and is described by the Arrhenius equation [82]. In diffusion-controlled reactions the reaction rate is a matter of the efficiency factor ri [see Eqs. (3 - 5)]. In more detail, the maximum reaction rate is expressed within the root of Eq. (4). Conclusively, the temperature dependence is a function of the square root of the enzyme activity. In practice, immobilized enzymes are much less temperature dependent when their reaction rate is diffusion controlled. [Pg.118]

Encompassing everybody is, in principle, the vision of activation. In practice, young claimants of social assistance were the first to be targeted by activation in 1978. In the 1990s the insured unemployed and sick-listed persons became targets of activation and most recently this is also the case for persons with handicap and persons from ethnic minorities. [Pg.224]

Another concern with packed-bed reactors is reproducibility. There are two parts to reproducibility can multiple packed-bed reactors be made reproducibly and what is the stability of the reactor The first question concerning reproducibility can be answered as follows. The art of packing a column is at times difficult and each individual analyst will have different success. However, all packed-bed reactors can be calibrated in the FIA system. A variation in the performance level between reactors of less than 10% is acceptable. The second reproducibility question concerns the loss in reactivity due to reagent degradation or saturation of the reactive sites. In the ideal case the reactivity of the column should not change with respect to time, thereby producing a reproducible signal for the same concentration of analyte. This is a more difficult problem. Ideally, the analyst should find the reactor conditions that will minimize loss of activity. In practice, especially with enzymes, this condition will not be met. Frequent calibrations will be needed to insure the most accurate results. [Pg.519]

In the kinetic models discussed so far, the catalyst surface was assumed to be uniform and to have constant activity. In practice, catalysts often show a decline in activity with time, because of poisoning or fouling these changes are discussed later. Catalysts may also change activity because of reactions that alter the chemical composition of the surface. One example of this is the supported silver catalyst used for the partial oxidation of ethylene. Kinetic data suggest that the active catalyst is a partial layer of silver oxide and not metallic silver. But a modified form of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model can still be used to correlate the data, as shown in the following example. [Pg.72]

Like the EEG, the EMG is a summation of cellular activity however, the EMG is primarily a result of the firing of muscle cells. If many muscle cells fire simultaneously (as happens when a muscle contracts), the electrical potentials generated near the surface of the skin will reflect that muscular activity. In practice, a very fine electrode is inserted into the muscle to stimulate a specific region. A second electrode or set of electrodes can then detect the resultant muscle activity. The EMG, then, is used primarily to detect abnormalities in muscle excitation. [Pg.519]

In relation to state safely management, the internal control provides an important input and basis for state safety eontrol (4) in that reports and the like flowing from the industry s own eontrol activities in practice quantitatively eonstitute the most eentral input - more eentral than supervision and verification carried out directly by state inspectors. This means that the quality of the internal control and its output have to be secured. Therefore, the internal control also constitutes a separate object of state control in order to ensure that it can serve the intended purpose. The internal control is made both a basis and an object for state safety control. [Pg.131]

The definition of specific activity in practice covers two different situations. The first, the definition of the specific activity of a radionuclide, is similar to the... [Pg.24]
