The capture of HCl gas just before the thermal crackiug is another characteristic of this process. The two tanks are alternatively used to protect the catalyst from HCl attack. Activated charcoal prepared from pahn shell is applied at a loading of 13% K2CO3. 

An inert gas is bubbled through the sample. The volatile hydrocarbons are transferred into the vapor phase and trapped over a sorbent bed containing 2,6-diphenylene oxide polymer (Tenax GC). A methyl silicone (3% OV-1 on Chromosorb-W, 60/80 mesh) packing protects the trapping material from contamination. Other adsorbents such as Carbopack B and Carbosieve S III may also be used. If pentane and other low boiling hydrocarbons need to be detected, the sorbent trap should be filled with activated charcoal, silica gel, and Tenax, respectively, in equal amounts.

Activated charcoal, also known as activated carbon, is used to remove various chemical substances from the air. It is used, among other things, in masks, rugs (in a closet, for example) and in air purifiers. Conventional air purifiers often use activated carbon, but usually this is insufficient for an MCS patient. Impregnated carbon generally works much better, because it can bind itself to more substances and therefore cleans more substances from the air. (Impregnated implies that a porous solid substance is drenched in a liquid to protect the product and, in this case, to improve its efficiency.) For this reason most air purifiers suitable for MCS use impregnated carbon rather than activated carbon. 

Adsorbents. The use of dry chemicals as adsorbents has been discussed above. However, there are other adsorbent materials, such as activated charcoal, hay, com cobs, sawdust, and such, that can be utilized as well. Most of them would work on many organic compounds as long as the spill was confined to a small area by either dikes or curbs, or as long as the spill was small and covered only a minimal area. The major problem in this application technique is that the personnel who apply the materials must wear adequate protective gear. An alternate technique would be to blow the absorbent material over the spill from a distance, using suitable machinery, such as a snow blower or forage blower unit (Greer, 1976). 

Dedicated Pre-screens for Protectants and Synergists. Some compounds such as activated charcoal have been used to physically protect crops from herbicide action. It is doubtful how successful in vitro assays would be for such compounds. The more intellectually and commercially interesting compounds are those that protect crops from herblcldal action by some biochemical/physiological mechanism 22). Preliminary studies have shown that corn cell cultures are protected from EPTC action by dichlormid. The mode of protection is probably the same in culture as in the whole plant 2S).
