A QC assessment was done for all samples. De-ionized water field blanks were collected on seven different days to evaluate process contamination. Site duplicates were taken at eight sites to evaluate repeatability and site variation. Instrumental precision was constrained by analysis of laboratory duplicate solutions, and is typically less than 5%. One piece of information that is often missing from research papers is a statement of the uncertainty in the measurements. Even if the author gives an estimate of accuracy, the process of critical evaluation implies an independent assessment of the reliability of the data. This process should be conducted by scientists who are familiar with the type of data in question and who have had experience in the measurement techniques that produced the data. There are usually some subjective elements of the evaluation process. Currently, nutrient analytical methods development often utilizes the method of standard additions as an intrinsic aspect of the development process. Essentially, the analyte to be measured exists in the matrix to which an identical known pure standard is added. The spiked and non-spiked matrix is extracted and analysed for the nutrient of interest. By spiking at increasing levels the researcher can establish, to some degree of certainty, the recovery and linearity of the standard additions. One can also evaluate data to determine reproducibility, precision, and accuracy.
