Major risk factors include current smoker, low body weight (<127 lb in postmenopausal women), history of osteoporotic fracture in a first-degree relative, and personal history of low-trauma fracture as an adult. Other independent risk factors include age, high bone turnover, low body mass index (<19 kg/m2), rheumatoid arthritis, and glucocorticoid use. Decision tools may help identify individuals who should undergo BMD testing, such as the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument and the Simple Calculated Osteoporosis Risk Estimation. 

Possible solutions modify existing diagnostic assessment instruments so criteria are assessed more dimensionally (no sxs, mild sxs, mod sxs, clinically signif sxs, severe sxs), plus assess for every diagnostic criterion use those taxometric procedures that can adequately deal with categorical data.

A comparability study using two Beckman CE instrument models (MDQ vs. PA 800) was performed to assess instrumental comparability. In this study, p7 values were determined for an antibody using each model. As shown in Table 8, the two instruments produced comparable pi values and comparable % corrected areas for each group of peaks. 

Like other standardization methods, the effectiveness of this method depends greatly on the ability of the standardization samples to assess instrumental biases that affect prediction. In many cases, this method uses a set of sealed transfer standards that are relevant to the specific application. In one study [112], it was found that the effectiveness of this method depended greatly on whether the standardization samples sufficiently cover the spectral intensity ranges that are to be experienced in the on-line process data. 

A QC assessment was done for all samples. De-ionized water field blanks were collected on seven different days to evaluate process contamination. Site duplicates were taken at eight sites to evaluate repeatability and site variation. Instrumental precision was constrained by analysis of laboratory duplicate solutions, and is typically less than 5%. Finally, standard reference material (SRM) water standards were analyzed with sample batches, to assess instrumental accuracy.

If one accepts the position that the structure of mental illness may differ for young people with MR, then it is also reasonable to choose assessment instruments that are appropriate to that population. There are several tools that have been developed for parent and teacher ratings of patients with MR. Examples are the Aberrant Behavior Checklist, the Developmental Behaviour Checklist, the Nisonger Child Behavior Rating Form, and the Diagnostic Assessment of the Severely Handicapped (see Hurley et ah, 1998 Chapter 32, this volume).
