Documentation abstracts, useful as they are, may also prove inadequate for final decisions, which would make it necessary for the searcher to obtain and examine copies of full patent specifications. Although the increasing availabihty of sets of full specifications on CD-ROM at modest cost is making it easier for searchers to have in their collections copies of those specifications they might need to consult, the necessity to go beyond computer output, whether to abstracts or full specifications, is stiU one of the bottlenecks of computer searching, and therefore an area in which significant new developments are hoped for.

It is the set of methods for representing, sorting, manipulating and retrieving information about chemical substances that distinguishes the techniques of chemical information handling from those of other disciplines. Chemical literature emphasizes the detailed structural characteristics of chemical substances. This is illustrated by the fact that for the 392,000 documents abstracted in 1975 in CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS, 1,514,000 chemical substance index entries were generated. Of these chemical substance index entries, 368,000 corresponded to substances which were reported for the first time in 1975. 

Publications such as book series that are periodical in nature but are not journals may be styled as either books or journals. CASSI lists every document abstracted and indexed by the Chemical Abstracts Service hence, book titles are included and abbreviated. Key words to look for with these types of publications include Advances , Methods , Progress , and Series . 

Bulletin de la Societe Chimique de France [Bull. Soc. Chim. Fr] (1858-1997). Five series of volume numbers were assigned between 1858 and 1954. No volume numbers issued from 1955 to 1991 1992 is Vol. 129 1997 is Vol. 134. From 1933 to 1945, published as Bulletin de la Societe Chimique de France, Documentation (abstracts, obituaries, etc.) and Bulletin de la Societe Chimique de France, Memoires (research papers). From 1978 to 1984, each issue was split into two parts (la premiere partie chimie analytique, minerale et physico-chimie la deuxibme partie chimie moleculaire). In order to distinguish the two parts for these years, the page number is prefixed by the part number, e.g., Es-Seddiki, S., et al., Bull. Soc. Chim. Fr., 1984,11-241. No longer published. Superseded by European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry and European Journal of Organic Chemistry.
