The main index headings for search other than the names of specific compounds are Paraffins nitration of Paraffins, nitro Paraffins, from nitration of— Paraffins, dinitro Hydrocaibons, nitration of Nitration of hydrocarbons Nitration of paraffins Petroleum, nitrogen compounds from Olefins, nitro derivatives and Acetylenes, nitro derivatives. These items are not mutually inclusive, e.g., references under Paraffins, nitration of are not necessarily to be found under Nitration of paraffins. In Chemical Abstracts collective index for 1937 to 1946, there are 19 entries under the first heading and 12 entries under the second only 10 are common to both lists. 

Quite naturally there is a certain amount of arbitrariness in this system, although the lUPAC nomenclature is followed. The preferred Chemical Abstracts index names for chemical substances have been, with very few exceptions, continued unchanged (since 1972) as set forth in the Ninth Collective Index Guide and in a journal article. Any revisions appear in the updated Index Guide new editions appear at 18-month intervals. Appendix VI is of particular interest to chemists. Both common and systematic names of compounds are used throughout this volume, depending on which the Editor-in-Chief felt was more appropriate The Chemical Abstracts indexing name for each title compound, if it differs from the title name, is given as a subtitle Systematic Chemical Abstracts nomenclature, used in both the 9th and 10th Collective Indexes for the title compound and a selection of other compounds mentioned in the procedure, is provided in an appendix at the end of each preparation. Registry numbers, which are useful in computer searching and identification, are also provided in these appendixes. Whenever two names are concurrently in use and one name is the correct Chemical Abstracts name, that name is adopted. For example, both diethyl ether and ethyl ether are normally used. Since ethyl ether is the established Chemical Abstracts name for the 8lh Collective Index, it has been used in this volume The 9th Collective Index name is 1,1 -oxybisethane, which the Editors consider too cumbersome. 

This review includes most of the published articles from the defined area and excludes only imidazoquinolines, which were reviewed in Weissberger-Taylor s series The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds (81MI1). Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry II (96MI1) mentioned only some of the azoloquinolines in the first edition the authors omitted citations about this type of compounds. The trend toward interest in these compounds can be illustrated by the number of citations in Chemical Abstract as shown in Table I. Besides Chemical Abstracts Substance/Subject (Collective) Indexes, the MDL database search has been used. 

No references to the original literature are given in the text. This is because the introduction of such references would have considerably increased the size and therefore the price of the book. However, a discussion on the literature of analytical chemistry is given in the Appendix. With the aid of the various volumes mentioned therein — which should be available in all libraries of analytical chemistry — and the Collective Indexes of Chemical Abstracts or of British Chemical Abstracts, little difficulty will, in general, be experienced in finding the original sources of most of the determinations described in the book.
