Absorption describes the rate and extent to which a drug leaves its site of administration and enters the general circulation. Factors that, therefore, affect absorption include the physicochemical properties of the drug that determine transfer across cell membranes as described earlier formulation or physical state of the drug site of absorption concentration of drug circulation at absorption site and area of absorbing surface. [Pg.3]

Colloid concentrations in the eluent were determined with a Bio-Tek multichannel (optical densitometer with fiber-optics technology Bio-Tek Instruments, Winooski, VT) microplate reader, precalibrated with known concentrations of each colloid at 540 nm. Total metal concentration in the eluents was allocated to solution phase and colloidal phase (colloid-bound contaminant). The eluent samples were centrifuged for 30 min at 3500 rpm (x 2750 g) to separate the soluble contaminant fraction from the colloid-bound contaminant fraction. The absence of colloidal material in the supernatant solution was verified by filtration through a 0.2-pm membrane filter. The soluble metal (Cu, Zn, Pb) fractions were analyzed by atomic absorption (concentrations >0.5 mg/H) or inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry (concentrations <0.5 mg/H). The colloid fraction was extracted with 1 M HNO3-HCI [32] solution and analyzed with the same methodology used for the soluble fraction. The results for the duplicate soil monoliths and for the two soils were combined for practical purposes, because the reproducibility between soil monoliths was within 15%. [Pg.40]

Toxicokinetic-related individual susceptibility factors may in elude individual differences in rates of absorption, concentration at target sites, metabolic activation, and detoxification of individual chemicals. In addition, people can differ in the induction of adaptive protective responses. Genetics, pregnancy, lifestyle factors (such as smoking, alcohol-drinking, and recreational drug... [Pg.36]

Some of the experimental results obtained in this study [14, 15] are shown in the next four figures. In Fig. 17.7 we present a plot of the NADH absorption (concentration), dashed line, and O2 concentration in solution, solid line, in mM/1 (scale on the ordinate at the right). The oxygen input, stationary or oscillatory, is shown in the top line. In Fig. 17.7 we see that changes in the NADH absorption and O2 concentration in solution occur... [Pg.176]

The order listed above is in many respects that of increasing complexity of the operations, and this is therefore the order in which they will be considered. Since in humidification the liquid is a pure substance, concentration gradients exist and diffusion of matter occurs only in the gas phase. In absorption, concentration gradients exist in both the liquid and the gas, and diffusion of at least one component occurs in both. In distillation, all the substances comprising the phases diffuse. These operations are also characterized by an especially intimate relationship between heat and mass transfer. The evaporation or condensation of a substance introduces consideration of latent heats of vaporization, sometimes heats of solution as well. In distillation, the new phase necessary for mass-transfer separation is created from the original by addition or withdrawal of heat. Our discussion must necessarily include consideration of these important heat quantities and their effects. [Pg.137]

Here e represents the molar absorptivity (concentration in mol/L and cell length in cm). For quantitative analytical use, a plot of A vs. C is generated and the resulting sample concentration can be read directly from the graph. [Pg.18]
