A list of ACS-recommended abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols is given in Appendix 10-2. Check the list to find an abbreviation. If no abbreviation is listed for the term you are using, you may devise an abbreviation provided that (1) it is not identical to an abbreviation of a unit of measure, (2) it will not be confused with the symbol of an element or a group, (3) it does not hamper the reader s understanding, and (4) you do not use the same abbreviation for more than one spelled-out form.

Bioinformatics is a relatively new discipline that is concerned with the collection, organisatic and analysis of biological data. It is beyond our scope to provide a comprehensive overvie of this discipline a few textbooks and reviews that serve this purpose are now available (s the suggestions for further reading). However, we will discuss some of the main rnethoc that are particularly useful when trying to predict the three-dimensional structure and fum tion of a protein. To help with this. Appendix 10.1 contains a limited selection of some of tf common abbreviations and acronyms used in bioinformatics and Appendix 10.2 lists sorr of the most widely used databases and other resources.

Eor each test, write the number of the question and your answer on a separate sheet of paper, then after going through all the questions in the test, compare your answers with those in the book. Attempt one open-book test and one closed-book test so as to mimic examination conditions. Refer to Appendix D for feedback on those questions you did not answer correctly. Information on the proprietary names listed in the book is given in Appendix A. Appendix B includes definitions of medical terms included in the book, while Appendix C lists abbreviations and acronyms. 

Most abbreviations (or acronyms) are defined at first use and then used without definition. Abbreviations often omit periods (e.g., LC not L.C.). (See appendix A.)... 

Atomic units are used in all equations and all considerations concern non-relativistic quantum mechanics in Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Square brackets, as in E[p] for instance, are used to indicate that the relevant quantity is a functional i.e. the correspondence between a function in real space p = p(r) and a real number (energy in this example). Abbreviations or acronyms denoting different approximate exchange-correlation functionals reflect their common usage in the literature. They are collected in Appendix. Unless specified, the equations are given for the spin-compensated case. 

Qualitative molecular-orbital theory approaches (and related qualitative treatments) are discussed throughout the text (particularly in Chapters 4 and 6), and a more detailed discussion of the contributions of such approaches presented in Chapter 8. As with the experimental methods discussed in Chapter 2, the topics presented in the present chapter are associated with numerous abbreviations and acronyms (and alternative titles). Both to serve as a key to these abbreviations, and as a source of reference to the numerous theoretical approaches now available, they are listed along with brief descriptions and references to further information in Appendix C. 

A glossary and list of acronyms, abbreviations, and symbols can be found at the end of this profile. Appendix D contains background information on radiation physics, chemistry, and biology. 

Quantum chemists have devised efficient short-hand notation schemes to denote the basis set used in an ab initio calculation, although this does mean that a proliferation of abbreviations and acronyms are introduced. However, the codes are usually quite simple to understand. We shall concentrate on the notation used by Pople and co-workers in their Gaussian series of programs (see also the appendix to this chapter).
