Zero waste system

In Figure 2 the flow chart of classic fuel burning incinerator combined with plasma vitrification system of all solid residues is presented. The system is self-supplied in the electric power and it employs only single plasma furnace for vitrification of solids. This way every classic waste incineration plant can be converted to zero waste emission system. The excess of energy in the form of electricity or steam can be sold. 

The waste from this treatment scheme should be suitable for discharge or reuse with a possible need for removal of inorganic dissolved solids if a "zero discharge" system is used. 

By a systems approach, a process is designed as a complex system of interconnected components so as to satisfy agreed-upon measures of performance, such as high economic efficiency of raw materials and energy, down to zero waste and emissions, together with flexibility and controllability faced with variable production rate. 

Adoption of new technologies producing zero waste material will no doubt be the best alternative but may not be always easily possible. Therefore minimization or if possible, total elimination of solid waste material from the liquid effluents and recycle of water to the plant will benefit the manufacturers and the eco-system in more ways than one. 

A skilful arrangement may produce waste water qualities that meet even stringent requirements, for instance as boiler feed water, and it is theoretically possible to realize a zero effluent system which produces only very small quantities of regenerates. 

The BASF refinishing system seems to offer quality, energy efficiency, economy, and speed for the small businessman operating a local body shop, while respecting the health and safety of the workers in this establishment and the environment in which these products are manufactured and used. The lower VOCs and almost zero-waste generated in production of this suite of products makes the BASF facility a less attractive target for those seeking to cause accidents with catastrophic consequences.

According to the developer, installation costs are low because no excavation or drilling is required, and no secondary waste is generated. Operating costs are minimal because the system requires no site power and the components need relatively zero maintenance (D192921, p. 3). 

The zero-emission energy recycling system (ZEROS) is a closed-loop thermal oxidation process that incinerates waste and recycles flue gas emissions for electrical co-generation. The technology uses a two-stage plasma torch combustion system, energy recovery system, and combustion gas cleanup systems.
