Clearly, the mechanical properties of woven fabric-reinforced composites are dominated by the type of fibre used, the weaving parameters, and the stacking and orientation of the various layers. However, there are additional subtleties which also affect composite performance. For example, some authors have noted the possibility of slightly altered mechanical properties depending on whether the yams are twisted prior to weaving in addition, damage accumulation under static and cyclic loading is different in laminates fabricated from twisted or untwisted yam. Films were produced for experimentation by melt (2) or solution (6) processes developed in our laboratory. The melt process is similar to commercial processes for producing composite parts from unidirectional pre-impregnated tape. Woven fabric reinforced composites are impregnated by submerging the fabric in an epoxy solution. Thus, the solution process which is primarily emphasized in this study provides additional information to characterize and compare matrices produced by the two processes.

Several classes of P- and N-containing polymers have been reported in literature. These include polybenzimidazoles, polyester-imides, polyamide-imide, polyanhydride-imides, polyurethanes, polyamides, and polymaleimide-amines. Heretofore, phosphorus-containing bisimide resins have received little attention. A different method of creating UHMWPE fibre-reinforced UHMWPE composites was presented by Mosleh et al. [179]. In this method, dry UHMWPE powder was mechanically oscillated through a funnel onto subsequent layers of short (25 mm) chopped UHMWPE fibres, or pieces of continuous UHMWPE fabric. By repeating this process with many layers of short chopped UHMWPE fibres or UHMWPE fabric, a layered stmcture was reported to have been created. These fibre assemblies were then heated under pressure to consolidate the structures. The short UHMWPE fibre-reinforced composites had a fibre volume fraction between 25 and 75%, while the continuous UHMWPE fabric-reinforced composites had a fibre volume fraction of 60%. Investigations into the potential application of these homocomposites in an articulation surface for a knee joint prosthesis were also described, as were the challenges associated with measuring the tribological performance of such fibre-reinforced materials [180].
