Work instructions meaning

Checks on environmental policy, organization and responsibilities, legislation, training records, emergency plans, performance targets, means of investigating incidents and written work instructions. 

Tables have been published relating Baume, Brix and specific gravity. As density is temperature dependent it is necessary to either bring the syrup to a fixed temperature or, as is more common in practice, to use temperature correction factors or tables. The relationship between density and concentration is slightly different for invert sugar or glucose syrups. The Brix scale is sometimes applied to products that are not sucrose syrups, such as concentrated fruit juice. Recipes are certainly in use that state boil to x Brix . In practice these instructions mean that the material should give the same reading as a sugar syrup of that concentration. As often happens in confectionery these practices have been proved to work empirically.

Laboratories worldwide have different facilities, instrumentation, personnel, and perhaps differing procedures, which means that each laboratory actually requires its own work instructions. These work instructions have to be included in the quality system documentation of the laboratory. In constructing work instructions, the ROPs can offer consultancy (7). In addition, there are other useful literature available discussing the methods for analysis of CWC-related chemicals and giving examples on how the laboratories have performed in round-robin tests or PTs (8 l4). 

Manufacturing documentation means all documentation used for manufacturing processes of a product. This includes work instructions, which are used by workers to assemble products by performing a number of manufacturing steps as described in the instruction. This does not mean, however, that all types of deviations will increase the risk of accidents. In some cases, deviations from, for example, work instructions represent a means used by the production personnel to adapt their behaviour to better suit the actual conditions at the workplace. A traditional means of implementing accident experiences in production systems in operation is to update the work instructions. These documents will successively accumulate accident experiences and become experience carriers for use in the training of new employees and in the follow-up of safe behaviour. Modifications of design are also a means of storing the accident experiences in the company s collective memory as long as the changes represent the company s best practice and are used in subsequent design work. 

In Manufacturing, one major aspect of quality is lack of variability i.e., reproducibility. Quality in production means having reproducible processing equipment and materials comprehensive MPIs and travelers operators trained to follow the instructions and product testing that reveals variability in a short time frame after production. These factors are considered in a quality audit of the manufacturing process. Manufacturability means (or should mean) the ability to make a quality product at a profit. In R D, quality is more subjective but includes the ability of others to reproduce the work - this means reproducible experimental conditions, calibrated instruments and controls, and accurate recording of experimental results. 

Defining individual responsibilities and authority alone will not define how personnel relate to one another. Interrelation means to place in mutual relationship, so what is needed is a definition of the relationships between all staff with quality responsibilities. The primary reason for defining interrelationships is to establish channels of communication so that work proceeds smoothly without unplanned interruption. Staff need to know from whom they will receive their instructions, to whom they are accountable, to whom they should go to seek information to resolve difficulties, and to whom information or product should be submitted when complete. 

An inventory management system should be established - meaning set up on a permanent basis to meet defined inventory policies and objectives approved by executive management. It should be documented - meaning that there should be a description of the system, how it works, the assignment of responsibilities, the codification of best practice, procedures, and instructions. The system should be planned, organized, and controlled in order that it achieves its purpose. A person should therefore be appointed with responsibility for the inventory management system and the responsibilities of those who work the system should be defined and documented. Records should be created and maintained that show how order quantities have been calculated in order that the calculations can be verified and repeated if necessary with new data. The records should also provide adequate data for continual improvement initiatives to be effective. 

A whole range of precautions may be based on the principles summarized earlier. However, general precautions, applicable to the majority of work situations, are listed in Table 5.13, many of which are included in legal requirements. For example, in the UK The Fire Precautions Act 1971 specifies requirements for fire resistance of surfaces and building structure, assessment of risk, means of escape, means for giving warning, firefighting equipment, and fire instruction and drills.

A feature of this analytical scheme is the marked reliance on infrared spectrometry and titrimetry. The former is particularly applicable to the qualitative characterization of unknown organic materials whilst titrimetry provides a rapid, precise and cheap means of quantitative analysis. The routine titrimetric determination of water, total acid (acid number) and total base (base number) forms a significant proportion of the work load in some analytical laboratories. It is instructive to consider how other techniques might have been applied to the solution of this particular problem, e.g. NMR spectrometry and chromatography.
