My request for words stems from my lifelong obsession to survey everything and anything, no matter how odd the survey may appear. Lorazepam shares with other benzodiazepines the ability to impair explicit memory, but has a distinct further effect on implicit memory as well (10). However, it impairs memory more than its chemically and kinetically similar analogue, oxazepam (11). The effects of lorazepam 2.5 mg and diazepam 0.3 mg/kg on explicit and implicit memory tasks have been examined in 24 men and 24 women randomly allocated to lorazepam, diazepam, or placebo (10). The names of fhe alkanes are composed of two parts a word stem (or prefix) and fhe ending (or suffix) -ane indicating that the molecule is an alkane. The first four word stems in Table 3.7 reflect common names, while the rest indicate the number of carbon atoms in the alkane. Thus C5H12 is pentane and C7H16 is heptane (hept = 7).

Kinetic treatments are usually based on the assumption that reaction does not occur across the micelle-water interface. In other words a bimolecular reaction occurs between reactants in the Stern layer, or in the bulk aqueous medium. It seems possible that a very hydrophilic anion such as OH- might not in fact penetrate the micellar surface (Scheme 1) so that its interaction with a cationic micelle would be non-specific, and it would exist in the diffuse, Gouy-Chapman layer adjacent to the micelle. In other words, OH" would not be bound in the Stem layer, although other less hydrophilic anions such as Br, CN or N 3 probably would bind specifically in this layer. In fact the distinction between micellar and aqueous pseudophases is partially lost for reactions of very hydrophilic anions. The distinction is, however, appropriate for micellar reactions of less hydrophilic ions. 

The word pseudo derives from the Greek stem pseudes meaning falsehood, which is often taken to mean having an appearance that belies the actual nature of a thing. 

In the cases where EPA has formally required such testing, the manufacturers have withdrawn their applications and suspended plans to produce the chemicals. While the decision not to produce a potentially toxic substance may serve the goal of TSCA to identify and prevent hazards before people are exposed, how can one quantitate the health impact of the manufacturers decisions I pose this question rhetorically, since EPA s requests for additional testing stemmed from a data base inadequate to assess risk. In other words, since there was not enough information in the first place to know whether there might even be a substantial health risk, it would be impossible to estimate the health impact of deciding not to produce such chemicals.
