Environmental Requirements Vlost large modern transfer stations are enclosed and are constructed of materials that can be maintained and cleaned easily. For direct-discharge transfer stations with open loading areas, special attention must be giv en to the problem of blowing papers. Windscreens or other barriers are commonly used. Regardless of type, the station should be designed and constructed so that all accessible areas where rubbish or paper can accumulate are eliminated.

Laminated safety glass has now become standard for automobile windscreens and is used for aircraft glazing. 

The methacrylic polymer remains a useful glazing material. In aircraft applications it is used extensively on aircraft which fly at speeds less than Mach 1.0. They form the familar bubble body of many helicopters. On land, acrylic sheet is useful for coach roof lights, motor cycle windscreens and in do-it yourself cabins for tractors and earth-moving equipment. Injection mouldings are frequently used for plaques on the centre of steering wheels and on some fascia panelling.

One of the most important properties of commercial glasses is their great resistance to corrosion any chemical laboratory apparatus, any window or windscreen provides an excellent illustration. When a monitoring site is selected, it is important to take account of environmental features. For example, ozone measured in or near automotive traffic can drop to 50% of the areawide value, owing to reaction with the nitric oxide firom exhaust emission. Ozone measured 7.5 m from a large tree in green leaf can drop to 70% of the areawide value, but it may also be reduced within 1 m of shrubs and grass.
