Western science chemistry

TO supplement my understanding of Western brain chemistry, IVe found it extremely useful to draw upon the centuries-old healing system from India known as Ayurveda, the science of life. A comprehensive and time-tested approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic medicine may well be the oldest system of healing in the world. It is still widely practiced in India, as well as among some practitioners in this country, including the famed holistic physician Deepak Chopra, from whom I ve learned what I know about this Mind-Body medicine.

This review outlines aspects of the various phases of Swiss chemistry from the introduction of alchemy in Western Europe, its transition to chemistry as a science and profession and the more recent practice. Attention is drawn to the large number of Swiss Nobel Laureates in chemistry and the contributions of Swiss physicists to chemical spectroscopy, from the days of Balmer. In all periods, Swiss chemistry has had European dimensions, and links can be traced to most host countries of previous Euroanalysis conferences and indeed to the next, at Lisbon, in AD 2000...

In 1950, Mark became the first western scientist to contact counterparts in the post-war Soviet Union. Renewing old friendships dating back to Vienna on the first visit, he has been treated to a number of special tours of the chemistry establishments of Russia since then. In return he and Mimi have hosted a number of Soviet scientists in New York and at their summer home at Lake Peekskill, NY. Even today he maintains close contact with many of them. One of his major contributions to science in the Soviet Union was his able service on the organizing committee of the Polymer Institute at Lomonosov State University in Moscow in 1963. 

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is funding research at the University of Nevada at Reno on the chemical environmental problems associated with mining of gold and silver in the desert environment of the western United States. Cyanide will be the focus of an environmental chemistry project which is intended to provide essential site and chemical characterization information to concurrent biomedical projects. This research will provide information on releases of cyanide to the environment from precious metal mining and help to determine the threat to human health (i.e., potential for human exposures to cyanide) from toxic mining waste. 

A few weeks before the first Solvay chemistry conference in 1922, French chemists signed a letter declining to reestablish relations among chemists of Western and Central Europe.
