World markets for vegetable fibers have been steadily declining in recent years, mainly as a result of substitution with synthetic materials. Jute has traditionally been one of the principal bast fibers (toimage basis) sold on the world market however, the precipitous decline in jute exports by India (Fig. 2) indicate the decreasing market demand for this fiber that is vitally important to the economies of India (West Bengal), Bangladesh, and Pakistan. [Pg.358]

There are some descriptions of water-borne outbreaks, or even small epidemics of acute gastroenteritis (diarrhoea), cholera and hepatitis E associated with catastrophic floods that occurred in developing countries, such as Sudan [34, 35], Nicaragua [36], Mozambique [37] and West Bengal [37]. On the contrary, no changes in the base-line outbreak incidence have been reported in developed countries after major floods [37, 38]. When infrastructures and water management are adequate, outbreaks of faecal-oral water-borne infectious diseases do not follow flood events, even in the case where water flooding has compromised the security of water facilities [37]. [Pg.154]

Arsenic is present at high levels in some soils and contamination of drinking water with arsenic is a major problem is some areas of the world. In West Bengal, India, millions of people drink contaminated well water. As a result hundreds of thousands have developed debilitating nodular keratoses on their feet.1 1" The problem is made worse by the increasing... [Pg.596]

It is important to note that the information obtained by each of the above techniques is very useful for understanding the composition and behaviour of a particular sample. A particularly appropriate example was the investigation of ground-water pollution by arsenic in the Lower Ganga Plain of West Bengal in India and Bangladesh. At one location, arsenic concentration was clearly well above the safe drinking threshold, while at another in the close proximity it was not toxic [24]. In this... [Pg.27]
